If 2014 was a bad year for Malaysia, this year belongs to France. Last year, Malaysia experienced a double whammy of aviation disaster when the country lost two planes – the missing MH370 and the downing of MH17. France’s first disaster occurred early of the year during the Charlie Hebdo shooting where 12 were killed.
Like Malaysia, France experienced its double whammy when its capital Paris was attacked for the second time on Friday night. As of time of writing, at least 153 people were killed with the worst carnage occurred at Bataclan where at least 112 left dead. Another 14 were killed on Rue Bichat at the site of the Le Petit Cambodge, a Cambodia restaurant.
Outside a bar called La Belle Equipe, 19 died on Rue de Charonne in the 11th district. Four others were killed each on Avenue de la Republique and outside the Stade de France respectively. While the Charlie Hebdo shooting was executed by Islamist terrorist group Al-Qaeda’s branch in Yemen, ISIS has claimed responsibility over the latest attacks.
After at least eight militants, all wearing suicide vests, brought the shocking violence to the streets of the French capital in the bloodiest attack in Europe since the Madrid train bombings in 2004, France declared a nationwide state of emergency and border lock-down. Just like the Charlie Hebdo shooting, the terrorists were reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” before randomly shooting at innocent people.
French President Francois Hollande, visibly shaken because he was watching a game at the Stade de France stadium before two suicide bombers strike and had to be rushed to safety, describes the attack as an “act of war”, vowing to strike back. Islamic State or ISIS or ISIL supporters on social media cheered their successful attacks.
President Barack Obama calls Paris attacks “outrageous” and an “attack on all humanity”. Amusingly, hours before the shock attacks on the French people, Obama downplayed ABC’s “Good Morning America” interview with George Stephanopoulos who asked Obama if ISIS was gaining in strength. Obama had specifically declared that ISIS has been “contained”.
Clearly, Obama was either lying through his teeth or totally clueless on what was he babbling about. Hollande, on the other hand, had underestimated the threat of ISIS so much so that the terrorists have defeated French Intelligence that the president had to be rescued like a Hollywood action drama.
Interestingly, the infamous ISIS/ISIL butcher “Jihadi John” (Mohammed Emwazi) was virtually untouchable, despite western superpowers’ military technology deployment. The British Arab man was on the loose for more than a year, beheading a number of foreign captives deliberately filmed in video.
Enter Mr. Putin from Russia whose serious bombings in Syria have attracted tons of supporters from not only Iraqis but also the ordinary Americans and Europeans. Suddenly the barbarian ISIS/ISIL, whom many suspect enjoys secret sponsorships, military assistance and endorsements from the western superpowers were running scared.
The fact that the Russian doesn’t distinguish between ISIS/ISIL and a moderate Sunni opposition that wants to see Assad regime go means the game plan has been changed. Whoever that isn’t with Bashar Assad is Russia’s enemy and will be bombed. For once, the American military couldn’t protect its sponsored rebels, let alone pretending not knowing ISIS/ISIL targets.
Jihadi John was one of many trophies that Mr. Putin would like to have. Suddenly, the American and NATO forces have became incredibly efficient and finally managed to track and “evaporate” the brutal butcher. It would be a great embarrassment if Russia could take out Jihadi John before the western superpowers.
So, was it a coincidence that the Russian’s entrance into Syrian war somehow had forced the killing of Jihadi John by an American Reaper drone, which in turns triggered the latest ISIS/ISIL attacks on Paris? Would Jihadi John remain a free man today, courtesy of western chess play, if Russia hadn’t entered the war game?
The fact that the Paris attacks were very well coordinated and involved six locations means it was well planned. The suicide bombers and the planners, suspected to be still at large, could be local-born or had infiltrated as Syrian refugees or both. If they were Syrian refugees, then Saudi Arabia is having the last laugh today for refusing an entry for them.
Saudi has 100,000 air-conditioned tents sitting empty but they don’t care about helping the Syrian refugees. Why? Perhaps the reason couldn’t be clearer than after the Friday Paris terrorist attacks as to why the super rich Gulf nations – Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain – do not entertain such refugee’s idea.
If all the ISIS/ISIL terrorists were local-born, then it’s a greater insult to Hollande administration because they couldn’t care or simply didn’t know about terrorism breeding grounds at their backyard. Either way, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and President Obama are shivering in fears about the ISIS’ next target.
As heartless as it may sound, these ISIS/ISIL suicide bombers are no different from Japanese Kamikaze military aviators. You don’t feed them and let them grow thinking you can control and contain them. You nuke them, the same way Hiroshima and Nagasaki were targeted during the World War II. It’s time the arrogant western superpowers work together with Russia to clear the mess.
