Osama bin Laden was terminated more than four years ago in 2011. But the terror group he founded – al-Qaeda – is alive and kicking. The group has also given birth to the barbarian group ISIS, IS, ISIL or whatever name you want to call them. In case you didn’t know, al-Qaeda has its own English language online magazine – “Inspire”.
The magazine is one of many ways the terror group uses to reach its audience, so much so that extremists learnt bomb-making from it. The latest issue of the magazine has raised American law enforcement officials’ eyebrows and concerns. It calls for lone-wolf terrorist attacks on U.S. economy leaders – mega rich billionaires and influential economists.
Apparently, the list in the Inspire magazine includes Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Larry Ellison, Charles and David Koch, and Jim Walton – all richest Americans on planet Earth. Casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson, former Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, former Mayor of New York City and billionaire Michael Bloomberg were also in the target list.
Inspire magazine, which is known for a notorious article – “How To Make A Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom” – obviously a recipe for explosives making, was once edited by an American-raised jihadist Samir Khan, who was killed in a 2011 drone attack together with cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.
According to NBC, this is the second time Bill Gates, world’s richest man with net worth of US$79.2 billion, along with Bernanke are targeted by al-Qaeda’s magazine. The first time when both men were listed was in late December 2014. So, will there be a terrorist attack on September 11, in time for 9/11 anniversary?
The 88-page issue, dated Sept 9 and entitled “Assassination Operations” calls for Muslims in the west to join the jihad caravan. Amusingly, the article offers a solution for the super billionaires to escape assassinations – by withdrawing their money from U.S. banks, investing their wealth outside American soil, and denouncing support for Israel.
However, a senior U.S. intelligence official said the article is an example of al-Qaeda’s newfound focus on lone-wolf attacks, taking a page from ISIS’ strategy book. Other analysts think the article was purely “aspirational” and should be taken with a pinch of salt. Wishful thinking or not, it pays to be extra cautious with enhanced security.
