They were there celebrating Bastille Day, or French National Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, an important event in the French revolution. Just like United State’s 4th of July, France’s 14th of July marks the beginning of republican democracy and the end of tyrannical rule.
Instead, they were stormed by a white truck, killing at least 80 people, including children, while injuring 20. The latest truck terror attack in the south-eastern French city of Nice is the deadliest in France since the November 13 (2015) Paris attacks, which killed 130 people. Christian Estrosi, the Mayor of Nice, has confirmed that police found firearms, explosives and grenades in the truck.
Like a bowling ball, the 20-ton white unmarked truck ploughed through hundreds of people watching a fireworks display for at least 2-kilometre along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront. The truck driver – a 31-year-old with dual French-Tunisian nationality – was said to have shouted “Allahu Akbar” before being killed in a gun battle with cops. A second man was believed to be on the run.
After briefed on the attack, President Barack Obama released his usual statement – “On behalf of the American people, I condemn in the strongest terms what appears to be a horrific terrorist attack in Nice, France, which killed and wounded dozens of innocent civilians. We stand in solidarity and partnership with France, our oldest ally.”
French President Francois Hollande who announced earlier that the country would not extend its state of emergency, had made a U-turn to extend it by 3 months until October 26. He had earlier said – “We can’t extend the state of emergency indefinitely, it would make no sense. That would mean we’re no longer a republic with the rule of law applied in all circumstances.”
A British holidaymaker Esther Serwah said – “I was just walking to the Promenade and then I saw everybody running and I just didn’t know what was going on. People were screaming at me in French but I didn’t understand. People were lying on the streets dead and people were running over the bodies. Everybody was saying it’s a terrorist attack. It’s just horrible, horrible, horrible. I’m in shock. I’m still shaking.”
Coincidently, the Eiffel Tower was on fire, triggering rumours on social media that the France iconic tower was under attack by terrorists too. Was the Nice attack related to ISIS? Just like the San Bernardino and Orlando terror attacks, ISIS didn’t take direct responsibility. However, the terror group is celebrating the attack in Nice, France.
Apparently, ISIS is celebrating the attack as retaliation for the death of Abu Omar al-Shishani – the terror group’s so-called “minister of war” – who was killed earlier this year by coalition forces while fighting in Iraq. ISIS supporters have created a hashtag that translates to “#the attack on the name of Omar Shishani.”
“Oh France, you and the all Europe will never be secure until we will live secure on every inch in the land of the Caliphate,” wrote one ISIS supporter whose Twitter account has since been suspended. “This is the beginning of the attack to take the holy revenge for the killing of Abu Omar Shishani, may Allah accepts him,” a jihadist posted on the ISIS al-Minbar forum shortly after the attack.
Before his death, Shishani was a trusted military advisor to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and had a US$5 million bounty on his head. Ironically, ISIS militants have been urging supporters to run westerners over with vehicles. Sheikh Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, an ISIS spokesman, had instructed jihadists to use whatever means (or objects) necessary to carry out their mission.
Specifically targeting the disbelieving American, Frenchman, or any of their allies, al-Adnani told jihadists in his audio in 2014 – “Smash his head with a rock, or slaughter him with a knife, or run him over with your car, or throw him down from a high place, or choke him, or poison him. Kill him in any manner or way however it may be.”
Obama and Hollande administrations may not treat the Nice attack as another ISIS terror attack, for whatever political reasons. However, it’s hard to deny that the attack carries ISIS fingerprints, one way or the other. Heck, it doesn’t even matter if the attack is called a “lone wolf” terror attack, in order “not to offend” the terror group.
What does matter is the way Nice attack was carried out. And United States, France and the rest of the European Union, including Malaysia and Indonesia in Asia, should be very afraid of this attack. Unlike conventional “detectable weapons” such as firearms, explosives, grenades and suicide bombers, it appears ISIS may have found a new lethal weapon – TRUCK.
ISIS militants or their supporters could from now onwards fly into any country in the world; steal or rent a truck, then start mowing people down in a zig-zag pattern through a large crowd. As proven in Bastille attack, the damage is equally devastating, if not deadlier, than blowing oneself up or spraying bullets. It’s easier and cheaper to steal a truck too.
What this means is countries with gun-control such as Indonesia and Malaysia, which have recently experienced first hand ISIS attack, would have sleepless nights. The prospect terrorists would be practically undetectable until it’s too late. They could be rich innocent-looking university students or poor Muslims who have been radicalized.
President Barack Obama has been blaming guns for domestic terror attacks while refusing to use the 3-magic words – Radical Islamic Terrorist. Is he going for truck-control now that Nice attack has proven beyond reasonable doubt that such transporter can be used as weapon of mass destruction?
