Yellow fever is not over yet, despite the “Yellow Uprising” had already ended more than 24-hour ago. Nope, we’re not talking about the follow-up debate as to why there were more Chinese than Malay participants during the 34-hour Bersih 4.0 rally. We’re talking about Bilqis Hijjas, who allegedly dropped some balloons and has insulted Najib Razak.
Apparently, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his legendary beauty wife Rosmah Mansor were at Pavilion shopping mall to officiate the DiverseCity International Arts festival. Both celebrities were on the ground floor at the centre court of the mall when seven “Bersih” yellow balloons – decorated with words “Democracy”, “Free media” and “Justice” – make its way.
It was reportedly that the balloons floated down behind the big screen television set, but both Najib and Rosmah didn’t react to the incident. Ms Bilqis, who was accused of deliberately releasing the balloons, was nabbed by the mall’s auxiliary police. Subsequently, she was handed over to the Dang Wangi police, detained, questioned and released after her fingerprints taken.
Amusingly, it is learnt that police have started investigations under Section 504 of the Penal Code for “intentional insult” with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or another offence. If found guilty, Bilqis Hijjas can be jailed for up to two years, or fined or both. From her Facebook, it seemed she had attended the mammoth Bersih 4.0 rally.
But her friend claims she was in Pavilion to distribute the balloons and had no intention of insulting Najib. Bilqis Hijjas is a performance artist and daughter of a prominent architect – Hijjas Kasturi – who won multiple awards internationally and was the architect of Wisma Equity which is located along Jalan Ampang and was completed in 1982.
A graduate from the Australian National University in Anthropology and alumni of Harvard University, 35-year-old Bilqis is the President of MyDance Alliance and Dance Programme Director at Rimbun Dahan. But should the prime minister continue to make a mountain out of a molehill, a day after the international community witnessed 300,000 people camped overnight telling him to resign?
Fresh from their prime minister’s RM2.62 billion scandal, Malaysians have learnt a new crime – “activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy” – whatever that means. In a nutshell, you simply can’t tell Prime Minister Najib Razak to be replaced, for whatever reason, because you can be slapped with this new section 124B charge which could land you in prison – for up to 20-years if convicted.
Thanks to the yellow balloons fiasco, enter a new crime that the prime minister is about to use extensively moving forward – intentional insult. But if both Najib and Rosmah hadn’t reacted to the yellow balloons in the first place, and surely they didn’t went to the police station personally to complain, how did the police know both of them were insulted?
Will we get to see boot licker Home Minister Zahid Hamidi rush to sign a law that bans yellow balloons, after he had done so on yellow T-shirts? If the Palestine had arrested a “dolphin” for being an Israel spy, shouldn’t Malaysia do something more dramatic – arrests a “balloon” for insulting Emperor Najib (*grin*)?
But here’s something to ponder upon. The prime minister has laughed off Bersih 4.0 rally as a kindergarten event which only managed to attract 20,000 Chinese participants. He also boasted he could mobilise 1,000,000 participants at the snap of a finger, if he wanted to. So, why felt insulted over seven lovely yellow balloons?
Going by his (or rather police) logic, shouldn’t 53% of 30 million Malaysians who voted against Najib make police reports too, over his “insulting” reason that the RM2.6 billion found in his private account was a “donation”? If the 7 yellow balloons didn’t hurt anybody but is deemed insulting, surely the unexplainable RM2,600,000,000 which is hurting everybody’s pocket qualifies as the biggest insult, no?
Hmm, what type of Bugis warrior who could easily get insulted by some yellow balloons? Why makes such a childish complaint when the prime minister is about win a coming federal elections with two-thirds majority hands down? Surely a great statesman like Najib son of Razak wouldn’t care less about some balloons. If it was Mahathir, he probably would have picked up the balloons and gave an innocent smile.
