For as long as humankind can remember the debate about whether the cell phone could cause cancer or anything related to radiation never ends. Since mid-1990s, when the Nokia cell phone rules the world in a huge wave, consumers have been concerned about the prospect of health problem due to exposure from using the gadget. They continue to use it anyway.

Now, the whispers of getting a cancer related to usage of cell phone have been confirmed. In actual fact, usage of cell phone does cause cancer. It didn’t get major coverage, as compared to ISIS brutality, simply because the risk was minimal, extremely minor and negligible that researchers or even the consumers themselves rubbished them off.

But the threat is real, otherwise the city of Berkeley, California wouldn’t care passing a law that requires cell phone stores to inform customers, in writing, about the potential dangers of using the devices. In fact, the Berkeley law goes to the extent by stating that children and anyone carrying their phone in a “pocket or bra” could be at increased risk of radiation exposure.

How Mobile Phone Radiation Penetrates Brain

In Yakymenko’s meta-study – basically a study of hundreds of other studies – it reveals many findings of previous researchers into how radiofrequency from your phone can damage DNA. That damage can add up over time and cause a variety of health problems, like cancer, headaches, fatigue and even skin problems.

Dr. Igor Yakymenko mentions in his article that his data was “obtained on adults who used cell phones mostly up to 10 years as adults,” which by definition means some fairly old devices were involved. Apparently, his study originates from the Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology, and Radiobiology in Kiev.

Here’s an example of Yakymenko’s finding – using your phone for just 20 minutes a day for five years increased the risk of one type of “brain tumor threefold”, and using the phone an hour a day for four years upped the risk of “some tumors three to five times”. The risk may sound low, but in 2012 alone there were 6.4 cases per 100,000 U.S. adults.

The National Cancer Institute in the United States estimated that about 23,400 new cases of primary malignant brain and central nervous system cancers were diagnosed in 2014 across the US. Yakymenko wrote that “oxidative stress” – “an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defense” – is what we call metabolic imbalance.

Yakymenko also cautioned that brain and related cancers can take as many as 30 years to develop. Hence, don’t be so quick to give yourself a clean bill even if initial check-up turns out negative about having a cancer. But with the popularity of cell phone, or rather smart phone today, nobody can lives without it, even if cancer will surely develop in 10 years.
