However, the 17-year-old beauty queen isn’t any ordinary woman. Not only poor, she was a garbage collector who received very little education. But it was a photograph of Ms Khanittha in her tiara, sash and heels kneeling at her mother’s feet in front of garbage bins that touch the hearts of netizens after it was posted on a Facebook page.

Apparently, she was thanking her mother who raised her single-handedly after her parents separated when she was young. Her mother collects and recycles rubbish to make a living and she helps whenever she has a chance. According to Thai Rath Online, she started helping her mother collecting rubbish when she was in primary school.

The highest form of showing gratitude, honour and respect for many Asians is to kneel, and Mint didn’t hesitate to kneel down to thank her mother in front of a row of dirty trash cans. “What I have today is because of my mother. She and I make a living by doing honest work, so there is no reason why I should feel inferior” – said the beauty queen.

Khanittha claims she has never been teased by friends nor does she feel ashamed about her mother’s profession. Besides helping in separating the garbage for resale, earning a few hundred baht each time, she also sells second-hand clothes. The humble beauty queen hopes to continue her study at college as soon as she saves enough money.

However, she almost lost her crown when organizers discovered she had lied about her educational background by stating on the application form that she had passed Mathayom 6 (Level 12) when in fact her highest educational achievement was merely Mathayom 3. It blew up when a university contacted them to offer her a scholarship.

Ms Mint apologized to Somchai Leknoi, the contest organizer, for the education background lie, claiming she had no intention of doing it and had failed to check her application which was filled in by her uncle. Fortunately, it wasn’t a big deal because the event did not limit the education of competitors.

And since the organizers and the two runners-up were alright with the minor hiccup, she gets to keep her crown, and the prize money of 30,000 baht. The beauty pageant winner has since been approached for work in advertising, television and film. Let’s hope Khanittha “Mint” Phasaeng could further her study while the story inspires people about poverty and the respect for their elders.
