We have been told that Delta variant is very contagious. Analysts and scientists said the Indian “Delta” variant (known as B.1.617.2) were 40-60% more transmissible than the U.K. “Alpha” version (known as B.1.1.7), which itself is 50% more transmissible than the most common Covid-19 strains. But exactly how contagious is the Covid-19 strain in layman terms?
Now, a warning issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday provides some clue. It says the Delta variant is as contagious as chickenpox, if not more. Worse, the Coronavirus version has a longer transmission window than the original Covid-19 strain and may make older people sicker – even if they’ve been fully vaccinated.
In fact, based on studies in the U.S., it was discovered that the Delta variant is more transmissible than the viruses that cause MERS, SARS, Ebola, the common cold, the seasonal flu, and even the 1918 Spanish flu. The only disease that appears to spread faster than Delta is measles. The only consolation news is the Delta remains as deadly as its ancestral strain.
Therefore, the next step is for every government is to “acknowledge the war has changed”. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said new research revealed that people infected with the Delta variant carried tremendous amounts of the virus in the nose and throat – up to 1,000 times more virus – even if they are fully vaccinated, resulting in higher transmissibility.
Worse, Walensky said that while the Delta will definitely hit unvaccinated people the hardest, some vaccinated people could be carrying higher levels of the virus than previously thought and are potentially transmitting it to others. That explains why Covid cases have increased by 145% in the last two weeks in the U.S. and hospitalizations and deaths are rising again.
In presenting its report to House lawmakers, the CDC made a U-turn from its earlier guidance and has now recommended fully-vaccinated Americans to resume wearing face masks indoors. The document said 35,000 symptomatic infections are occurring per week among 162 million vaccinated Americans – proof that Delta can break through protections supposedly provided by vaccines.
Initially, data derived from CDC for the two-week period ending on June 5 showed that Delta variant cases made up 9.5% of the total Covid-19 cases in the United States. Subsequently, about a month later, it dramatically shot to 50% in the week of July 3. However, by July 20, the variant first identified in India becomes dominant – making up 83% of all Covid-19 cases in the U.S.
While vaccines are the only best defence, it is increasingly less effective at preventing infection, especially against the Delta. A week ago, Israel’s Health Ministry revealed that Covid-19 vaccines made by Pfizer and BioNTech are just 39% effective against the Delta, down from an earlier estimate of 64% (which conflicts with U.K.’s data of 88% effectiveness).
However, the two-dose vaccine still provides strong protection in preventing people from getting seriously sick, demonstrating 88% effectiveness against hospitalization and 91% effectiveness against severe illness. This is important to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed with critical cases that could cripple the healthcare infrastructure.
But half of Americans have either refused to be vaccinated or not fully inoculated. As of July 29, only 49.9% of the population had received the two-dose vaccines while 57.9% had received at least 1 dose. Worse, the CDC found 225 million Americans (about two-thirds of the U.S. population) actually live in Covid hotspot – 1,495 counties fall into the highest transmission area, while 548 counties in the substantial category.
The latest CDC findings will present two challenges to U.S. President Joe Biden – how to get the remainders of unvaccinated Americans to go for the Covid-19 jab, and to persuade vaccinated people to wear masks and practice social distancing. Vaccinated people may be concerned about whether Coronavirus vaccines remain effective or if a booster dose is needed.
It was only on May 13 that the American people were told they no longer needed to wear masks indoors or outdoors if they had been vaccinated. People may feel they have been cheated – or even betrayed – after being told about the great efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines, only to hear now about the virus’ ability to break through the miracle vaccines.
The agency also said 5,914 fully vaccinated people have been hospitalized or have died with Covid infections as of July 19. In the same breath, the extreme contagiousness of Delta makes herd immunity a more difficult story to sell. Considering that people who had been vaccinated will still be transmitting the virus to other vaccinated people, the herd immunity is no longer relevant.
