Where is the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or the King of Malaysia? Nobody seems to know the whereabout of the monarch, not even the prime minister himself. Officially, the Agong had taken a two-month break from November 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018 – apparently due to health reason. Hence, Sultan Nazrin of Perak took over the duties of the King during his absence.

 

However, Sultan Nazrin, who is also Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, officially ended the duties on Dec 31, 2018. That was three days ago. Naturally, people are speculating what had happened to the King. If the monarch was really on sick leave, shouldn’t there be at least some update as to the status of his health, assuming he was undergoing medical treatment?

 

The suspense took a dramatic turn when photos of what appeared to be a wedding between the King – Sultan Muhammad V – and a former Russian beauty queen goes viral online. The photos have since raised eyebrows, with naughty rumours that the King was not sick at all but rather had taken leave to marry Miss Moscow 2015 – the young 25-year-old Oksana Voevodina.

Apparently, according to the British website Mail Online, the Malaysian King met Voevodina, whose father – Andrey Gorbatenko – is said to be an orthopaedic surgeon, some 19 months ago when she was modelling luxury watches. The beauty, whose vital statistics were given as 33-23-35, reportedly a business graduate from the elite Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.

 

The wedding ceremony supposedly took place on Nov 22, 2018 – during the period when the King was supposed to be on medical leave – at a concert hall in the Moscow suburb of Barvikha, after the former beauty queen is said to have converted to Islam earlier in 2018. So, everything seems to be fine with the Russian wedding, which incorporated both Muslim and Russian traditions.

 

But if there was nothing wrong and scandalous with the wedding, why was there the need to be super-duper secretive, so much so the fantastic news looked like a cover-up for an illegitimate wedding? When the whole world knew about the wedding, for some strange reason, the Palace (Istana Negara) had not issued any statement on the matter until today.

The 32-million Malaysians were flabbergasted when even Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad had no idea if the King had indeed married; replying when asked by media – “I don’t know. I don’t have any official confirmation, so I can’t say anything.” Perhaps the answer could be found by a report the newlyweds visited a fertility clinic in Germany days before their lavish Moscow wedding.

 

The Malaysian King reportedly anxious to start a family, after his first marriage failed to produce any children. So, could the health reason stated for the monarch’s 2 months leave was nothing but an embarrassing “infertility” problem? It may be normal in the Western world, but in conservative Malaysia, a King who lacks sperm counts could be quite humiliating.

 

Of course, all these are mere rumours and speculations, until the Palace makes an official announcement to clarify the situation. However, the Kelantan government may have created unnecessary attention when the state ruled by PAS Islamist party today asked the Attorney General’s Chambers to act immediately to stop the circulation of fake news on the King.

The Kelantan state government is not impressed over speculation that the King, Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan, will abdicate the Yang di-Pertuan Agong throne. It will be a huge embarrassment not only to the monarch, but also to the Islamist party. However, in the land of scandals, more often than not rumours have the nasty habit of turning out to become reality.

 

Deputy Mentri Besar (Chief Minister) Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah demanded that the Attorney General take action, arguing – “That’s the duty of the attorney-general. We wonder what the attorney-general is doing to the point that a lot of rumours, accusations and speculations have gone viral on social media. Action must be taken and investigation must be done.”

 

Exactly what does the Kelantan chief minister expect the A.G. Tommy Thomas do when even the prime minister has no access to the real story behind the Agong’s disappearance? The attorney general isn’t the gatekeeper of ISP (internet service provider), let alone social media enforcer who is responsible to detect and verify the authentication of news or speculations.

Amusingly, even the Kelantan chief minister isn’t sure if the rumours of the King giving up his throne are genuine or otherwise. However, Mohd Amar bragged that his government enjoys a close relationship with the King. In that case, can’t the boastful chief minister tell all and sundry where the heck is the monarch? Can the chief minister at least confirm that the royal wedding had indeed taken place?

 

Trying to silence social media as if the country is ruled by a dictator will only create more confusions, frustrations, rumours and speculations. More importantly, people have the right to ask the status of their 49-year-old King because his medical leave is over and he has the responsibility of ensuring the constitutional monarchy is still functioning, no?
