North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, the guy whom U.S. President Donald Trump called the Rocket Man, appears to have repented. The cheese-obsessed fat boy has literally prevented the world’s first Nuclear War when he made a history – crossing the infamous DMZ line and stepping into South Korea, the first North Korean leader to do so since the 1950-53 Korean War.
Waiting for him on the other side of the world was South Korean President Moon Jae-in. Both Mr. Kim and Mr. Moon shook hands and before they realized it, they were hugging, chatting and holding hands as if they were long lost brothers. They also planted a tree together. Suddenly, the Rocket Man didn’t look like the monster that the Western media have been portraying.
The 34-year-old dictator was extraordinary friendly with smiles all over his face. He looked so innocent that it’s unbelievable that he was the same guy who had threatened to bomb United States into complete oblivion with nuclear warheads last year. Heck, he even took the trouble to bring Pyongyang “Naengmyeon” all the way for the South Korean president.
Naengmyeon is noodles in a chilled meat broth, topped with beef brisket, pickled radish, sliced cucumbers and half a boiled egg. Kim had also sent a chef from Okryu Gwan, a famous Pyongyang restaurant, to prepare the dish. Almost instantly, the Pyongyang-style cold noodle has become a hit in South Korean restaurants.
Taking advantage of the stunning successful summit between the North and South Korea, restaurants are offering special menu such as “unification liquor” and “unification pizza”. The Koreans are optimistic that the day South and North Korea unify isn’t too far away. A survey taken on Friday, the day Kim met Moon, showed 64.7% believe the North will denuclearise and keep peace.
Before the summit, only 14.7% of those polled said they believed such miracle could happen. Many South Koreans were struck by the live TV images during the summit of a smiling and joking Kim. Never before had they seen the witty and humble side of the dictator. Kim had even admitted that his country’s train system was inferior, when he had boasted how great his kingdom was last year.
Kim also promised not to wake up Moon any more with early morning missile launches. He instructed North Korea to adjust its clock to sync with South Korea. Without hesitation, Kim pledged “complete denuclearisation”, the most important part of the summit. Moon’s approval rating after the summit skyrocketed to 70%. Even President Trump was surprised at the “easy victory”.
The same dictator who had executed his uncle with anti-aircraft gun has finally, for some weird reasons, decided to become the good guy, agreeing to everything that the United States wanted. The notorious Kim plans to invite foreign journalists to witness the shutdown of North Korea’s main nuclear weapons test site in May – South Korean President Moon Jae-in proudly announced to reporters.
Mr. Moon has even suggested that President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize. Seriously, it would be wise to hold on to that thought and not to count the chickens before they hatch. Kim Jong-un could be pulling off the biggest scam in the world, and it would be embarrassing to see Trump having to return that Nobel Peace Prize later.
The North Korean leader could easily win the Oscar, if his drama and orchestration is nothing but to hoodwink the United States of America. He has managed to shift international opinion about his image in a matter of months. He has charmed the world ahead of his summit with Donald Trump, adding pressure on the U.S. president to ease sanctions against North Korea.
Already, China’s state-run Global Times newspaper has called on the U.S., South Korea and Japan to lift unilateral sanctions on North Korea. South Korean Moon was so impressed with Kim that he was practically open to the possibility of economic cooperation during his meeting with the hermit kingdom’s leader. Kim was probably laughing his way home at his acting skill.
North Korea’s offer to shutdown its nuclear test site in front of everyone is perhaps Kim’s greatest stunt in winning the international support. Reports have suggested that North Korea’s nuclear site has been so badly damaged that it can no longer be used. So, Kim has nothing to lose but everything to gain by allowing the site to be inspected by all and sundry.
His deliberate act of “sincerity” gives him the bargaining power before his meeting with Trump. The U.S. would look like the bad guy if Trump leaves the room without any positive results. With most South Koreans now has a different perspective of Kim Jong-un, people would blame Trump for bullying the innocent Kim if the U.S. does not ease the sanctions.
More importantly, both Kim and Moon did not give details on concrete steps to realise a genuine nuclear-free Korean Peninsula. North Korea has so far offered no timeline for dismantling its nuclear weapons and facilities. Nor has it clarified how it defines a “nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.” In fact, Kim hasn’t promised to give-up his nuclear weapons entirely without any conditions.
Kim Jong-un had told President Moon Jae-in that he would abandon his nuclear weapons if the United States agrees to formally end the Korean War and promise not to invade his country. The question of how can the U.S. guarantee not to invade North Korea is already a lengthy debatable subject. Can Kim trust the Americans? In the same breath, can Trump trust the dictator?
