These two Johns represent Philippines at the 2015’s 28th Southeast Asian Games, Singapore, which otherwise is also known as the SEA Games. John Elmerson Fabriga, 21, and John David Pahoyo, 17, were supposed to bring back medals in a 3-meter springboard event. But not only there was no medal, they spectacularly score a big “Zero” during their fourth dives.
Amazingly, both Johns landed awkwardly on their backs, earning no points from the judges. However, they didn’t sulk or pull a face, but enjoyed themselves laughing off their blunders. John Elmerson Fabriga was the first who landed funnily, before he was laughed and joked by team-mate John David Pahoyo. What happen next was beyond scientific explanations.
As though both Johns had already conspired, or perhaps due to their brotherhood, John David did exactly the same stunt when it was his turn to make the dive. Both of them were seen giving each other “high 5” thereafter. Either it was a mission accomplished, or John David deliberately wanted to prove he is John Elmerson’s bestest friend – forever (*grin*).
In his Facebook, John David seems to have gotten over it, regardless whether it was a pure blunder or a deliberate act. He had posted how he enjoyed Jurassic Park with his family, and even posted on a Singaporean SGAG page how he laughed at himself over his funny landing. Nevertheless, he was proud to represent his country. Nonetheless, he seems to show great sportmanship (*tongue-in-cheek*).
Now called the “Splash Brothers” the video of Fabriga and Pahoyo’s funny and fabulous dives has gone viral. But not everybody is laughing, as Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia reportedly said he wants an explanation from the aquatics chief Mark Joseph. Needless to say, the Philippine divers finished in the bottom of the standings in the event.
Garsia said – “I will give the opportunity for the Philippine Swimming Inc. president (Mark Joseph) to explain because he fought for these divers to come here and compete.” However, Mark said he wasn’t surprised by the poor showing of Elmerson Fabriga and John David Pahoyo in Singapore.
Philippine Aquatic Sports Association (Pasa) head, Mark Joseph, explained he wasn’t surprised by the embarrassing showing of John Elmerson Fabriga and John David Pahoyo because both were new and first timers. Mr Mark also used the shameful stunt as proof that he needed more money and better facilities.
Interestingly, Mark Joseph revealed the increasing political tensions between China and Philippines have affected the training of the Filipino divers. Apparently, the Chinese coaches have become very expensive, charging US$12,500 (£8000; RM46,800) monthly compared to the previous US$1,800 (£1,160; RM6,740) rate.
So, did the head of Pasa deliberately picked and chose inexperienced John Elmerson Fabriga and John David Pahoyo to perform an embarrassing diving stunt to teach the Philippines authorities a lesson? Most importantly, were both Johns received instructions from Mr Mark to make the funniest dive ever in the history of Philippines – by scoring “ZERO” point?
