The new World Cup champion is here – Germany. After 24-years, at last the Germans have every reason to celebrate for weeks to come. Too bad Argentina’s Lionel Messi couldn’t score any goal and help his team win, as that would make him the new hero on par with Diego Maradona, who helped his country lifted the trophy in 1986 defeating West Germany 3-2.
Thanks to 22-year-old “Super” Mario Götze who scores the only goal for Germany in extra time, Germany becomes the first European country to win the World Cup in South America. This is the fourth time Germany lift their World Cup, but their first as a united country (previously it was West Germany).
It was a sweet victory to German chancellor Angela Merkel, as she sat a few seats from Russian President Vladimir Putin – whose country will host the next World Cup in 2018. Unlike the easy meat they’ve got when Germany humiliated Brazil with 7-goals fiesta, the German machines found it hard to breach the Argentina’s net until 23 minutes into extra time.
Messi, a four-time world player of the year, obviously was under great pressure to deliver goals for Argentina. He had a heavy task to equals the legendary Diego Maradona. And that’s the problem – a single Messi against a batallion of German machines. Still, it was a spectacular result that Argentina didn’t get slaughtered the way Brazil did. Now, Argentines can boast they’re better than the Brazilians.
To be fair, Argentina got their opportunities when Gonzalo Higuain mis-hit a shot in the 21st minute and he sent it wild. Eight minutes later, the Argentina fans broke into celebration mode when Higuain strikes again – this time he put the ball into the net. Unfortunately, it was “offside”. If you wish to believe, Argentina’s lady luck had taken a day off (*grin*). Perhaps Argentina Coach Alejandro Sabella was hoping for penalty kicks to determine the winner.
After the final whistle, Argentina fans were seen fighting among themselves while riots erupt on the streets of Argentina after their losses. But in Germany, their fans were having great time celebrating their victory. In fact, every single German around the world is still celebrating the return of World Cup to their country. And who can blame them considering they beat Argentina with the same 1-0 goal 24 years ago in 1990?
From the moment the prestigious World Cup trophy makes its grand entrance in a special Louis Vuitton travel case, carried by former Spanish player Carles Puyol and model Gisele Bundchen, to the moment the Germany team lifted the trophy and the players sharing their proud moments with wives, girlfriends and family members, the sight was unbelievable. Let’s the photos do the talking.
