There’s a reason why President Donald Trump loves the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. He has very little respect for human rights, especially scumbags like illegal drug addicts and pushers. Trump also likes the way Duterte handles so-called international organizations such as the United Nations. Thanks to Trump, Duterte is arguably the most powerful man in Southeast Asia.
On March 10 (Saturday), the Philippines president has again unleashed his trademark war of words with the United Nations. He said U.N. human rights team should be thrown to crocodiles to be fed – if they dare step on Filipino soil to investigate his controversial war on drugs. His threat was aimed specifically at UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.
Apparently Duterte, popularly known as “Dirty Harry”, was not impressed after Mr. Zeid said he deplored the Philippines president’s instruction to the policemen to ignore inquiries into the alleged human rights violations associated with his anti-narcotics war. The UN planned to send lawyers from the ICC (International Criminal Court) to the Philippines to investigate the killings.
Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda of the ICC last month opened a preliminary examination of a complaint for crimes against humanity filed against Mr. Duterte and at least 11 of his officials over alleged extrajudicial killings in his brutal war on drugs. Malacañang, however, belittled the ICC probe as a “waste of time and resources”.
Criticising the U.N. Human Rights Chief Zeid for being ignorance of the Philippines law, Duterte argued that his directive is perfectly legal as it is provided for by the 1987 Constitution. “That is provided for in the Constitution – our Constitution,” – Mr. Duterte said, referring to the right to remain silent when the ICC lawyers came to question local law enforcers.
Pointing out that the Philippines is among the 47 member-states of the UN Human Rights Council, Mr. Zeid said – “The (Philippine) government has a duty to uphold human rights and to engage with persons appointed by this Council.” President Duterte, however, went ballistic a day after Mr. Zeid called for a “psychiatric evaluation” of the Philippines’ leader
In a speech to troops at the headquarters of the military’s Western Mindanao Command, President Duterte reportedly said – “This son of a bitch … So these stupid (members of the U.N.) will come here. Leave it to me. Do you have crocodiles here, the ones that really eat humans? Throw the sons of bitches to them.”
Duterte advised his men – “If you answer their questions, it will be freewheeling, it is recorded. Anything you say may incriminate you. So the best way is to just keep silent. Just tell them: ‘We have a commander-in-chief.’ Haven’t I told you? I take full responsibility. Just do your job in the performance of your duty within the bounds of the law.”
The Filipino president said as a trial lawyer, who had worked for 9 years himself, he knows what he’s talking about – “I should know my law and I should know how to protect you. But the ICC lawyers, ‘these guys do not know their law’.” He also insisted that he did not violate any law by ordering the police and the military to destroy drug syndicates and their apparatus.
He claimed he never gave orders to kill, just to destroy the organization. “So what’s wrong with that? Can I not protect my country by killing people and destroying the apparatus?” – Duterte asked. He also justified that if there’s a fight and somebody dies, it’s because “they wanted it.” He said even a drug factory can be bombed by his military boys.
According to official statistics, about 4,000 Filipinos have been killed by the police in a nationwide crackdown on drugs dealers and addicts since Mr. Duterte came to power in mid-2016. The police have repeatedly claimed they only fire on those resisting arrest – claims that are often disputed by witnesses. Thousands more have been executed on the streets by masked assassins.
The president’s “Dirty Harry” style and open support for the flouting of the rule of law has put him on a collision course with international institutions tasked with upholding human rights such as the UN Human Rights. The UN was also upset with Duterte government’s decision to include a UN special rapporteur – Victoria Tauli-Corpuz – on a list of 600 people to be classified as “terrorists.”
Ms Tauli-Corpuz, who is based in the Philippines and has been accused as a member of a communist militia called the New People’s Army, said she now feared for her life. If the questionable list of communist guerrillas is enforced, Duterte government would have the power to closely monitor all of those listed and to limit their resources.
This is not the first time “crocodiles” are being linked to “Executioner” President Duterte. A witness – Edgar Matobato – in an extraordinary hearing in the Philippine Senate, had claimed that the president paid a squad of hit men to carry out summary executions that involved feeding a body to a crocodile, chopping up corpses and dumping slashed bodies into the sea.
While it’s hard to believe that Duterte, a former mayor of the Philippine city of Davao, would give instruction to throw UN human rights lawyers to the crocodiles, no one should underestimate his war on narcotics. And he’s not going to play ball or gets intimidated by a bunch of UN lawyers seen as interfering with the internal affairs of the country.
He isn’t shy of slapping stinging remarks on foreigners dare to question his administration, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, whom he also called the “son of a bitch.” He also would not think twice about bombing mosques to get rid of terrorists. And he was ready to eat up terrorists – alive and raw – if he ever gets really upset with them.
Yet, Duterte has won over an unexpected admirer – U.S. President Donald Trump. The U.S. leader deliberately added a day to his original schedule so that he can attend last year’s ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit in Manila, despite the Philippines leader’s awful track record on human rights and his pledge to “never visit the lousy U.S.”
