Donald Trump is turning America into an isolated country, according to his critics. If that’s true, then meet Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines new president who is going to turn the country into a cowboy town. Nicknamed “Digong”, Rodrigo “Rody” Roa Duterte is a Filipino lawyer and politician who has been mayor of Davao City for a whopping 22 years.

That’s as long as Malaysia’s longest serving Prime Minister – Mahathir Mohamad – who held the post for 22 years from 1981 to 2003. While everybody knows Mahathir, very few knew Rodrigo Duterte – until now. Duterte has claimed victory when ballot count shows he had almost 39% of votes cast, more than 5 million votes ahead of his nearest rival with 90% of votes counted.

Philippine Elections 2016 - Casting Vote

President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino is standing down as the constitution limits presidents to one 6-year term. A former state prosecutor nicknamed “The Punisher” by Time magazine, Rodrigo Duterte recently joked that, as mayor, he should have been first to rape an Australian missionary murdered in a prison riot.

He was referring to a 1989 prison riot in Davao – “They raped all of the women. There was this Australian missionary (Jacqueline Hamill). When they took them out, I saw her face and I thought, ‘Son of a whore. What a pity. They gang-raped her, they all lined up. I was mad she was raped but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first.‘”

Philippine Elections 2016 - Presidential Candidates

Manuel Roxas, a former investment banker and the grandson of the first president of the Philippine Republic, is in second place with 9-million votes (23%) as compared to Mr Rodrigo’s 14.8-million votes, with 10% more votes to be counted. Grace Poe, a former school-teacher and a popular first-term senator, is currently third with 21% votes but has conceded defeat.

But the rape joke wasn’t Mr Rodrigo’s only distasteful comment, which would easily make all of Donald Trump’s bombastic rhetoric, insult and trash-talk combined look like child’s play. Like Trump, however, Rodrigo Duterte is very popular in the Philippines so much so that he’s also being called as the Asia’s version of Donald Trump.

Rodrigo Duterte – New President of Philippine

Recalling Pope Francis’s visit to the Philippines in January 2015, Duterte told the people about his frustration of being stuck in Manila traffic in his speech last November – “It took us 5 hours to get from the hotel to the airport. I asked who was coming. They said it was the pope. I wanted to call him. ‘Pope, son of a whore, go home. Don’t visit anymore.'”

One of the reasons he is so popular is his crackdown on crime. His supporters believe he’s a crime buster better than “Dirty Harry” Clint Eastwood. He made some astonishing claims that in the first three to six months of office he is going to solve major problems, like crime and corruption. And here’s his interview about crime fighting.

Duterte is accused of many vigilante killings. When asked about his plans to fight crime in an interview in June 2015 – “I do not want to commit a crime but if by chance, God will place me (in the presidency), watch out. The 1,000 (I allegedly killed) will become 100,000. That will fatten the fish in Manila Bay. I will dump their bodies there.

A son of a governor loyal to Marcos, Duterte was expelled from high school before the naughty boy was exiled to a nearby town only to join fistfights. It was during the turbulent dictatorship years that he came of age as prosecutor. In a campaign, he recalls – “I saw how they perverted the system. Even a rapist could walk free if the motherfucking fiscal was corrupt!”

Rodrigo Duterte – Mayor of Davao City for 22-Year

While businessmen and investors are worried about the return of a new dictator 30-year after the fall of Ferdinand Marcos, the Filipinos worship Rodrigo Duterte who yells – “If I promise to kill you, I will really kill you. Drug dealers, give me a reason to keep you alive, you son of a bitch!” And it’s not hard to understand why they love him so much.

A hotbed of communism, Davao was a bloodbath between rebels and security forces for as long as one can remember. Enter Filipino Dirty Harry – Rodrigo Duterte – whom together with a vigilante group would kill petty criminals in cold blood. Today, “murder city” Davao is transformed into one of Asia’s most habitable and peaceful cities, where cops are everywhere.

Philippine Elections 2016 - Davao City Policemen

Duterte, 71, would announce names of suspected criminals on TV, only to find some of them ended up dead later. Between 1998 and 2015, his death squad has allegedly killed 1,424, of whom 132 were minors. Amazingly, a survey done by Ateneo de Davao University shows that more than half of residents think Duterte’s death squad is “OK”.

While there’s little doubt that Duterte is the ultimate candidate who can solve criminality, corruption and illegal drugs, what about human rights? Here’s what he says – “Forget the laws on human rights. If I make it to the presidential palace, I will do just what I did as mayor. You drug pushers, hold-up men and do-nothings, you better go out. Because as the mayor, I’d kill you.

Philippine Elections 2016 - Rodrigo Duterte Supporters

Under President Benigno Aquino’s 6-year-rule, the Philippine has shed its label as the “sick man” of Asia, registering economic growth of 6.3% annually over the past five years. Unfortunately, the growth has not trickled down to the poor, not to mention corruption is still alive and kicking. That has produced an opportunity for the Davao City mayor.

The Philippines’ new president cleverly tapped into the discontent of poverty, poor public services, crime, corruption and insurgencies. However, he has not articulated an overall foreign policy for the country. When the Australian and U.S. ambassadors criticized his joke about wanting to be the first to have raped the Australian missionary, he simply told them to “shut up”.

Rodrigo Duterte – New President of Philippine - To Plant Flag On China Island

He said he would talk with China about territorial disputes in the South China Sea but if nothing happened, he would Jet Ski alone to an artificial island newly created by China and plant the Philippine flag there and say “This is ours”. Amusingly, he said China could choose to shoot him but that would turn him into a national hero. He also said communist rebels could play a role in his government.

All of Duterte’s opponents have accused him of making remarks that threaten the rule of law and democracy. Clearly, he’s happily screwing the democracy because his Filipino hardcore supporters are willing to go with him to the end of the world, even after swearing about the Pope in the strongly Catholic Philippines. Like Donald Trump’s success, Rodrigo Duterte’s rhetoric is working wonderfully.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte With A Supporter

On sex, Duterte bragged repeatedly about his sexual appetite and having 2 wives and 2 girlfriends – “I was separated from my wife. I’m not impotent. What am I supposed to do? Let this hang forever? When I take Viagra, it stands up.” He promises voters his mistresses would not cost a lot because he kept them in cheap boarding houses and took them to short-stay hotels for sex (*grin*).
