Forbes has just released its compilation of the richest person in every state of the United States of America. The U.S. has more billionaires than any other country in the world, at least that was what Forbes claims. China would, of course, dispute this claim as a different study showed the Middle Kingdom of China has more billionaires than the U.S.
The American business magazine counted 565 American billionaires for its 2017 list of the World’s Billionaires. China would probably laugh it off as the kingdom has at least 609 billionaires. Anyway, different criteria and methodology used to compile the list of billionaires would produce different results. Regardless, the trophy belongs to either the U.S. or China only.
America has at least a billionaire in every of its 50 states – except in 7 states – namely Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota and Vermont. Last year, there were only 6 states without a billionaire. The state which has dropped from the list is Mississippi. While Leslie Lampton is still the richest person in Mississippi, he dropped out of the billionaire ranks.
Still, the richest of the non-billionaire group is worth a staggering US$900 million. That person is Gary Tharaldson of North Dakota, a former physical education teacher and insurance salesman. He bought his first Motel 8 in 1982, built up a portfolio of about 350 properties across the U.S., and sold 130 hotels to Goldman Sachs for a cool US$1.2 billion.
Leslie Lampton who lost his “billionaire” title this year is still worth an estimated US$760 million, not bad for a person who founded refining and chemicals conglomerate Ergon in 1954 with just 2 employees. Today, he employs 2,300 people. Even the poorest of the 50 states of America is worth US$340 million – Jonathan Rubini and Leonard Hyde from Alaska.
The latest ranking takes into account wealth both self-made and inherited, and includes the world’s richest man, Bill Gates, in Washington, as well as Walmart heirs Jim and Alice Walton in Arkansas and Texas, respectively. The graphic map above and the list below shows the richest person in every state of the United States.
