If you see a snake and an Indian, kill the Indian first – goes the saying. This belief, or rather an insult or even a racist statement, is not only popular in Malaysia but also Thailand and even the America. Of course, in the U.S., they were referring to the Indian as in the Native Americans who ruled the land before the arrival of the “Whiteman”, who colonized them thereafter.

 

A more popular quote in the U.S. came from a general during the American Civil War – Philip Henry Sheridan – who said “The only good Indian is a dead Indian.” President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt was less extreme but said something quite similar – “I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of ten are“.

In the context of Malaysia and Thailand, the Indian refers to the people of India origins. The belief was: the Indians were so untrustworthy that they are more dangerous and venomous than a snake. Therefore it’s advisable to kill the Indian first should you see a snake and an India. The belief crawls into business world with the perception that Indian businessmen generally are bad paymaster.

 

There’s a logical explanation to the saying though, which most likely has been twisted over the years. In India, a sight of an Indian charming a cobra which dances to a flute is simply mind-boggling. During the ancient time, these snake charmers were rumoured to control the snakes through black magic. So, if you want to get rid of the snake, you must first kill the charmer, who happens to be an Indian (*grin*).

But are Indians worse than Chinese, Russians or Americans as far as trustworthiness is concerned? Get real, everyone cheats regardless of race. The difference is whether they cheat the smart way or otherwise. Perhaps the world’s most explosive financial scandal – 1MDB scandal – could shed some light if Indians are indeed more dangerous than the Chinese.

 

Penang-born Jho Low (real name: Low Taek Jho) is not only a crook disguised as a successful businessman but also a genius conman. He single-handedly siphoned at least US$700 million of 1MDB’s fund into his own company, Good Star Limited, without breaking a sweat. And he has been enjoying himself with the ill-gotten money – quietly.

On the other hand, 1MDB’s President Arul Kanda Kandasamy has been fire fighting and twisting facts about the company’s financial scandal, earning a fraction of what Jho Low had siphoned. And because Arul keeps twisting facts, he is seen as more dangerous and venomous than a snake. The Indian talks a lot while the Chinese earns a truckload.

 

But there’s a group of people who are more dangerous than the Indian and a snake combined. They are known as the “Mamak”, a term used in Malaysia to describe Indian Muslim. The most successful (and dangerous) Mamak in Malaysia is none other than former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who was born Mahathir Mohd Iskandar Kutty.

The reason why a Mamak, or any Muslim wannabes for that matter, is so dangerous starts when they have to prove to the Muslims that they are more Muslim than the Muslims. In order to do that, they have only one way – the extreme way. Along the way you’ve Chinese Muslim such as Ridhuan Tee who is as dangerous, if not more venomous.

 

But Mahathir Mohamad was a politician who needed to play the role of a racist to justify his premiership. The same goes to Ridhuan Tee who needs to make a living by selling his supposedly Islamic knowledge as a university professor to some gullible students. However, the danger comes when politicians and ignorant Muslims started worshipping preachers.

Juhayman al-Otaybi was a preacher who had tried overthrowing Saudi Arabia government when he stormed and sieged Mecca in 1979, after he proclaimed that the ruling Al Saud dynasty had lost its legitimacy because it was corrupt and had destroyed Saudi culture by an aggressive policy of Westernization. But he was a Saudi Arabian and a Muslim.

 

Can you imagine the level of extremism a Muslim wannabe who doubles as a preacher can possess? We’re talking about the controversial Indian Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, who’s treated like a Hollywood celebrity in Malaysia. In reality, he’s nothing but a snake oil salesman who happens to be gifted with excellent skill memorising the Quran, Hadith and other religion’s literature.

Just like a great snake oil salesman or owner of Genneva Gold ponzi business, Mamak Zakir Naik talks as if he was a God messenger. He also loves insulting other religions at the same time. The “feel good” factor alone is enough to attract tens of thousands of Muslims to hear his speech. After all, people love to hear they’ve chosen the right religion and were hearing from the God’s mouth.

 

But who could blame the Malaysian Muslims who flock to Zakir Naik’s talks when at one time Genneva Gold fanatics would kill anyone dared bad-mouth the company, which turned out to be nothing but a Ponzi scheme after all. Greedy and gullible investors had actually believed Genneva Gold could consistently make money faster than Warren Buffett – forever.

Armed with the easiest product to sell – Islam – what the preacher needs to do is to lecture about doubt and hatred towards other religions, with some student-converts-to-Islam drama thrown in between, and voila, people would believe Zakir just had breakfast with the God. It never crossed their minds that if Zakir is so great, he should have united Saudi Arabia and Iran after more than 10 years of lecturing.

 

Zakir Naik should have had converted hundreds of millions of ignorant Hindus in his own country India, not to mention tens of millions of fake Christians in United States, if he is a genuine preacher blessed and endorsed by the God. At the very least, shouldn’t the great preacher have already converted Islam’s #1 enemy – Israel – and wipe out the 8-million Jewish from the world map?

Ahh, not only he is no different from Juhayman al-Otaybi who brought weapons to the holy mosque Masjid al-Haram during the 1979’s “Siege if Mecca”, this preacher is also a great admirer of terrorist Osama bin Laden. In fact, he had openly urged every Muslim to become a terrorist. And what business does a terrorist in preacher’s clothing bring to Malaysia?

 

After days of preaching and converting dramas, the real mission is revealed. Lecturing Malaysian Muslims was just the side dishes. The main dish and actual job is to unite the corrupted UMNO party and clueless PAS Islamic party. After badly wounded in the 1MDB scandal, Prime Minister Najib Razak needs PAS to strengthen his chances of winning the next national election.

PAS President Hadi Awang on the other hand, needs to marry UMNO after decades of fruitless battle for real power and money. But his party is split about uniting with UMNO, a fake Muslim party that worships money over Islam. That’s why Zakir Naik suddenly ventures into politics – calling for a coalition government of UMNO and PAS (*grin*) – and promoting Muslims vs non-Muslims.

 

It appears preacher Zakir is also a mercenary, who is willing to wear any hat, for the right price. No wonder PM Najib Razak and ulama Hadi Awang wanted to be photographed hugging and rubbing shoulders with the preacher. Most likely, the Indian Muslim preacher was paid millions to influence the ignorant Malaysian Muslims that a united UMNO-PAS is the best invention since sliced bread.

But why creates all the Bollywood dramas of lecturing, converting and merging when it’s easier to grant this person a citizenship and makes him the country’s supreme Islamic spiritual adviser? Surely 100% of Malaysian Muslims would vote exactly what Zakir Naik tells them to. If only he can preach and convince all Malaysians that US$1 billion found in Najib’s personal bank account was a donation – from God.
