Many think the President of the United States (POTUS) is the most powerful man in the world. That may be true right after the Allied Forces won the World War II and the US became the world superpower. By virtue of the POTUS being the commander-in-chief, the president can authorize a nuclear attack by a push of a button through his “football” briefcase.
In the modern world, tons of leaders possess such nuclear briefcase; hence it’s a myth that POTUS is the only most powerful man on planet Earth. Ask anybody on the street and they can tell you the most powerful person could be Russian Putin, North Korean Kim Jong-un, Chinese Xi Jinping, or even Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe.
But those are dictators who do not subscribe to the concept of democracy, you may argue. Fair enough. So, let’s search for the most powerful man in a democracy world. Well, after unleashing the WMS (Weapon of Mass Sacking) yesterday, is Malaysian Najib Razak qualified as the new kid on the block who’s more powerful than President Obama?
Let’s see. Najib the son of Razak, whom Obama regarded as his golf buddy has just sacked his deputy, Muhyiddin Yassin. What had he done to deserve the trophy as the second deputy PM to be sacked in the history of Malaysia since Independence? He disagreed with Najib for keeping silent about pocketing RM2.62 billion (US$696 million) in his private account.
The honour of being the first deputy PM to be sacked went to Anwar Ibrahim in 1998, who’s currently serving another round of prison (damn those lucky mosquitoes). But at least dictator Mahathir, who sent Anwar to his first round of prison, took the trouble to explain why Anwar had to be punished. The allegation was that his deputy Anwar was involved in sodomy.
And what was the compelling excuse given by PM Najib in sacking his deputy? Nothing. True, Najib can actually sack his deputy whenever he likes because the office of Deputy Prime Minister is not provided for in the Constitution of Malaysia. However, by (UMNO) tradition, you do not sack your deputy unless his or her sacking is justifiable.
Just like the VPOTUS (Vice President of the United States), Malaysian deputy Prime Minister is the second-highest position in the executive branch, and would normally ascend to the Prime Ministership upon the death, resignation, or removal of the Prime Minister. Can Obama ask for Joe Biden to be sacked if his deputy criticises the president for pocketing US$696 million without a good reason?
Heck, was there even a single case in the history of America that a Cabinet member was fired for questioning his president for allegations of corruption and money laundering to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars? Not that any American can think of. But Emperor Najib has not only fired his deputy, he had fired four other Cabinet members.
Supposing Obama was caught with his account flushed with US$696 million cash, thanks to an explosive revelation by the naughty Wall Street Journal and CNN. But the lame duck president chose to deny the money was for his personal use, without any further explanation. He also declines to sue the Wall Street Journal.
What were the chances that White House would be business as usual? Can Obama suspend CNN from its business for three months for creating a negative perception about him? Mr Najib had done precisely that, and nobody can do anything about it, besides barking and begging for the prime minister to resign. So, who’s the most powerful man here?
Here’s something more dramatic. The United States Attorney General (A.G.) is the head of the United States Department of Justice. The attorney general is nominated by the POTUS and takes office after confirmation by the United States Senate, unlike Malaysian A.G. who doesn’t need any confirmation from anybody as long as the prime minister likes him or her.
While the U.S. Attorney General serves at the pleasure of the president and can be removed by the president at any time, Malaysian Attorney General serves at the pleasure of the Agong (King) and cannot be removed by the prime minister at any time. But Mr Najib had done that because the A.G. was about to charge him with crimes of pocketing US$696 million.
Would Obama (dare) sack his A.G. Loretta Lynch because she has found compelling evidence about the president’s hanky panky dealings; and is about to start an impeachment process? Not only Najib had rushed in sacking his A.G. Gani Patail, even though he was about to retire in 2-months, he had also “appointed a friendly” new A.G. – who had already retired.
That’s right, not only the new A.G. – Mohamed Apandi Ali – was a former Kelantan UMNO treasurer, the 65-year-old former judge also had led a three-member Court of Appeal bench that ruled unanimously against allowing the Catholic Church to use the word “Allah” in its publications to refer to God.
Coincidently, Mr Apandi also headed a three-member Court of Appeal in 2013 which released two policemen from charges of murdering Mongolian Altantuya Shariibuu, who was killed in 2006 in a high-profile case linked to a submarine deal involving Najib’s former personal aide (Razak Baginda) when he was Defence Minister.
Now, is there anyone who still thinks the President of the United States is the most powerful man in the world? With a stroke of a Cabinet reshuffle, the tainted Prime Minister Najib Razak can now not only offers zero explanation on his RM2.62 billion cash, he will be declared as clean as baby diapers by the new Attorney General. Anyone who disagrees will be put behind bars by the new thuggish deputy PM Zahid Hamidi.
