Colonel Gaddafi (Qaddafi) didn’t die peacefully, as with other dictators. The once poweful and billionaire dictator is now dead but unlike Hitler who put a bullet into his head, Gaddafi begged for his life after being dragged from a drain. Apparently, Gaddafi tried to flee in a convoy from Surt, his hometown, but was hit by an American Predator drone and a French warplane. Two vehicles were hit, neither carrying Gaddafi, but the rest of the convoy scattered and fled through nearby woods, including Gaddafi who had been in a French-made special armoured vehicle, which also contained satellite communications systems.

How Gaddafi was Captured

Rebels on the ground soon move in to attack the convoy’s survivors. Gaddafi who was allegedly injured in both legs, but not dead, made his escape with bodyguards through trees and hid in two concrete severs. However they were spotted by rebels and most of the bodyguards were killed before one surrender in an attempt to save Gaddafi, who is also known as “Mad Dog”. With a Kalashnikov in one hand and a pistol in the other, Gaddafi emerged from the drain wounded asking “What’s happening?” The rebels, however, showed little mercy even after Gaddafi captured pleading “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot …” One fighter is seen pulling his hair and others beat his limp body.

Gaddafi was then dragged 50 yards to a black Jeep and thrown on to the bonnet. It was reported that moments after he begged for his life, someone shot him dead, in what his captors said was shot “like a dog in the street”. Video also captured his bloodied body being dragged through the streets of his home city of Sirte – his body was actually paraded through the streets of Misrata on top of a vehicle surrounded by a large chanting crowd. Gaddafi is the first leader to be killed in the ‘Arab Spring’ wave of popular uprisings that have swept the Middle East. And unlike Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein who was similarly pulled from a hole where he was hiding and eventually hanged in Baghdad, Gaddafi was executed.

Gaddafi’s golden gun, a gold-plated 9mm Browning Hi-Power pistol, was seized by a 18-year-old boy, Mohammed al-Bibi – one of several rebels who took credit for the death of the tyrant. Many claimed to have beaten Gaddafi with their shoes – a sign of extreme disrespect in the Middle East. It was a sad but necessary end to the 42 years of bloody repression by the Mad-Dog, who called himself “King of Kings” and had a weird taste of sleeping in a Bedouin tent guarded by dozens of female bodyguards. One of his four Ukrainian nurses who was rumoured to be romantically linked to Gaddafi, 38-year-old Galyna Kolonytska, however fled Libya after the fighting started.

Now that the brutal dictator is dead, dispute has started between the NTC and the fighters from Misrata, a stronghold of the rebel movement that brought Gaddafi down with help from NATO, over where to bury the body that bore a bullet hole in the side of the head. Besides finding a secret suitable location, Gaddafi’s burial is also delayed as the United Nations human rights office called for an investigationinto how he died. As of now, his body is being kept in a cold storage site in Misrata, formerly used for meat and other produce. Although Gaddafi should be given a burial in accordance with Islamic principles, many do not actually care what happened to the tyrant’s body, as long as he disappears.

Gaddafi Died Other Arab Leaders
For many Arabs, the humiliating capture and killing of Muammar Gaddafi serves as a warning and lesson to other tyrants in the region. Gaddafi was the third Arab head of state to be ousted this year, after Tunisia’s Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali and Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak. Obviously Gaddafi’s death would scare other Arab leaders still clinging to power such as in Syria and Yemen. Already Syrian people carried placards saying: “Syrian rebels congratulate the Libyan people for killing the rat Muammar Gaddafi,” and “Death is the fate of all oppressive rulers – first the rat Muammar Gaddafi, then the thug Bashar al-Assad.”
