She received 7 “encourage” votes and 7 “discourage” votes. As the highest-placed woman candidate, UNESCO Chief Irina Bokova was a favourite to become the first woman secretary-general of United Nations. However, the Bulgarian politician who recently caught in a “Lead by Example” Award fiasco only finished fourth in the race for the top UN job.
Rosmah Mansor was supposedly received the UNESCO’s award in conjunction with the 71st United Nations General Assembly. Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO, had sent letters to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, his wife Rosmah Mansor and Foreign Minister Anifah Aman informing them about the special tribute award.
At the eleventh hour, amusingly, the award was cancelled. In the middle of a chaotic situation, the organizer of the event – Antiquities Coalition – clarified that the award had nothing to do with the United Nations’ cultural arm – UNESCO. Embarrassed and outraged, Rosmah claimed she had never applied for the award and in a face-saving attempt, had declined the award.
Nobody believes Auntie Rosie, of course, due to her obsession with international awards and trophies. Rosmah, whose lavish spending rivals Imelda Marcos, has allegedly spent a mind-boggling RM86.4 million hiring Emirate’s Executive Airbus A319 private jet for 2 months so that she could fly into Turkey with style – for a similar “Permata” award.
Irina Bokova was caught off guard and panicked when American media – Wall Street Journal and New York Times – started questioning the appropriateness of the award considering that PM Najib Razak is presently investigated “indirectly” by the U.S. Department of Justice over stolen money allegedly originated from 1MDB to the tune of US$3.5 billion.
Days after the award fiasco, Irina Bokova posted a statement titled – “The Malaysian Example – Partnering with Asia to Prevent Violent Extremism” – clearly trying to suck up to Rosmah Mansor. Her credibility took a hit for ignoring the fact that Malaysia was a breeding ground for terrorists, racism policy leading to riots and endorsement of gangsterism.
Bokova might have lost her opportunity for the top UN job partly due to her misjudgement, ignorance and idiocy in boot-licking Auntie Rosie. As one of Vladimir Putin’s favourites to become the next UN Secretary-General, she has her fair share of scandals, including owning a US$3 million Manhattan property and appointed her deputy who possessed fake qualifications.
The next UN Secretary General will be former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, after the 15 Security Council members, in a rare show of unity, agreed to put his name forward to a formal vote. The appointment of the post involves a two-stage process. A candidate is first recommended by the Security Council, and must then be approved by the 193-member General Assembly.
Thirteen candidates entered the race to replace South Korea’s Ban Ki-moon, whose second five-year term ends on December 31. In every ballot, the 15 Security Council members assessed each candidate by voting either “encourage,” “discourage” or “no opinion.” In the latest vote, Guterres received 13 “encourage” votes, no “discourage” votes and 2 votes of “no opinion.”
The next closest candidates, Vuk Jeremic of Serbia and Miroslav Lajcak of the Slovak Republic, each received 7 “encourage” votes and 6 “discourage” votes. Guterres, a trained engineer who worked as an assistant professor before entering politics in 1974, led his country from 1995 to 2002 as head of the Socialist Party.
Prior to Wednesday’s vote, Irina Bokova was challenged by another woman candidate from her own country Bulgaria – Kristalina Georgieva – who only entered the race last month. Bokova had failed to win enough support in earlier straw polls, which stretched to 6 polls before agrees to 67-year-old Antonio Guterres being the best person for the job.
