We seldom criticise Azmin Ali because he was supposed to be one of the rising stars within PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat or National Justice Party). However, he’s the last person on planet Earth you should trust. Actually, he’s more venomous than PAS Islamic Party President Abdul Hadi Awang. At least Hadi has been just a serial liar who happens to be quite dumb.

 

Mr. Azmin, on the other hand, would quietly sneak from behind and stab you in the back before acting innocent. Anwar Ibrahim was the fool who has gotten backstabbed – repeatedly –  by Azmin, his protégé whom he thought was more loyal than his wife Wan Azizah and daughter Nurul Izzah combined. After Pakatan Harapan (PH) won the general election last May, Azmin has shown his true colour.

 

The former Chief Minister of Selangor has essentially switched sides to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s PPBM (Bersatu). The premier just needed to gift the 54-year-old Azmin with an extremely powerful portfolio – Minister of Economic Affairs – to break Anwar’s PKR party into two. Believing he is being groomed to be the next premier, Azmin has chosen to burn the bridge between him and Anwar.

That’s fine. If Azmin wishes to count his chickens before they hatch, that’s his rights. If he believes Anwar is game over and will remain as PM-in-waiting until his last breath, that’s his own gamble. Unlike Anwar, at least Azmin shows he is a decisive leader. The traditional image of a good leader is someone who is resolute and decisive.

 

However, “decisive” doesn’t necessarily mean a leader makes quick decisions. Not only Mr. Azmin, clearly disturbed at the defeat of Semenyih by-election, made a quick decision, but he also made a foolish decision. Instead of calmly accepting the results and admitting mistakes like a great leader, he panicked and rushed for the door of racism and discrimination.

 

He said PH should step up efforts to change and be the party of choice for ethnic Malay voters, as well as to continue the Bumiputera (son of the soil) agenda. “We must be brave and not hesitate in fulfilling our promises, especially on the Malay and Bumiputera agenda which is an integral part of the national agenda. We must do so without feeling apologetic and fearful of criticism of others,” – Azmin said.

What type of grass has the Economic Affairs Minister been smoking? Exactly what type of racist Malay agenda that he childishly wishes to bulldoze over other component parties of PH? It was the cocky Azmin who confidently declared that the excellent performance of PH in Selangor under his previous leadership will ensure its supremacy in Semenyih at the State Assembly by-election.

 

“In the four years I was in Selangor, we had endeavoured to the best of our ability and the people were happy with PH. I will put up in Semenyih. Semenyih is part of Selangor and Selangor is always in my heart. I am already well, my body is getting lighter, so it is easy for me to move around,’’ – Azmin arrogantly told reporters on Feb 9, weeks before the polling day.

 

Days later, Mr. Azmin Ali, also the PKR deputy president, mocked former premier Najib Razak’s online moniker “Bossku” and even challenged Najib to campaign in the constituency as he did in the Cameron Highlands by-election. But after the defeat, Azmin quickly described the results of the by-election as a wake-up call for Pakatan Harapan (PH), passing the ball to the coalition.

It’s safe to presume that had PH won the Semenyih convincingly, he will most likely bragged and took all the credit for the victory. Does it mean the former Selangor Chief Minister has actually not done enough during his reign for the people of Semenyih, considering the humiliating defeat? Otherwise, how does he explain the so-called mini-tsunami of the Malays?

 

It’s not hard to understand why Azmin Ali snapped and went ballistic with his Malay and Bumiputera agenda medicine. As the new blue-eyed boy of 93-year-old influential PM Mahathir, Azmin was the flag-bearer of the Semenyih campaign. He was supposed to bring back the seat to prove his worthiness. Instead, he lost it spectacularly, failing his mission unexpectedly.

 

As the Economic Affairs Minister, Azmin  oversees massive public funds involving the country’s economic well-being. Khazanah Nasional Berhad (KNB), the sovereign wealth fund of the Government of Malaysia, was specifically stripped away from Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng’s portfolio and given to Azmin as a new toy. KNB has mind-boggling assets worth RM157.2 billion (2017).

Hence, it’s quite troubling what he plans to do with such massive treasure in order to fulfil the Malay agenda. Does Azmin plan to give more handouts to win the support of Malay voters? Or does he plan to give more cash than former Santa Claus Najib to the Malays, taking the meaning of “Cash is King” to a new level?

 

Perhaps he plans to force Chinese business owners to surrender more than 30% stake to the Malays to win their applause. Or perhaps he wants more discounts be given to Malay home and car buyers. Maybe make life more difficult for the non-Malays to create an impression that Malays are supreme while other ethnics are pariah second class citizens is part of his plan.

 

Perhaps Azmin Ali had forgotten how the PH won the last May General Election, after which he was rewarded the nice job as the Economic Affairs Minister. Now, the short-sighted Azmin wants to make a U-turn, throwing reforms and pluralism out of the windows. After just a small defeat, he sends a message at lightning speed that PH is no different from the previous corrupt and racist Barisan Nasional (BN) regime.

Does he really think his new boss’ PPBM party could be more Malay than UMNO-Malays and more Islamic than the PAS-Muslims? He should advise the leadership of PH to create a new niche, offering new propositions, inspirations and landscape, to entice the Malay community. Playing the same racist card which UMNO has been playing for 60 years will only backfire on the PH coalition.

 

Without the 90% support from the ethnic Chinese, the PH will definitely lose power – unless Azmin could mysteriously win over 50% of Malay votes (as can be seen with the 59% Malay support received by opposition BN in Semenyih) within the next four years before the next general election. To achieve that, Azmin has to be extremely racist, more racist than all the UMNO warlords combined.

 

The problem with Azmin pushing and rushing for Malay agenda is that it will certainly irritate and annoy the Chinese voters. And where do you think the Chinese votes will go when they see PH becomes the same animal, worse even, like BN? They will either refuse to vote at all or worse, throw all their votes for the devil they knew – Barisan Nasional – to teach PH a lesson.

You see, the ethnic Chinese have nothing to lose. Unlike the Malays who heavily depended on government assistance and handouts and whatnot, the Chinese has in place a strong and robust ecosystem where the community thrives and prospers despite six decades of discrimination. They have survived 61 years under the BN regime, and chances are they could continue to survive under BN again.

 

Besides, after the shock defeat last May, who can guarantee that the BN will not become a better government if they are given another chance to rule again? When push comes to shove, the Chinese can leave DAP, if DAP refuses to leave a racist PH coalition. The Chinese can survive under the harsh condition of being in the opposition, being used as the punching bag.

 

Is Azmin willing to go back to the opposition camp now that he has tasted power and wealth? He should learn from his new Jedi Master – Mahathir Mohamad – by staying cool and calm. After all, the next general election is four years away. A week is a long time in politics, let alone four years. Azmin’s act of recklessness means he is not a prime minister material.

There are many ways to skin the UMNO-PAS alliance. If the Islamist party could betray their ally in the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat for merely RM90 million, it does not seem very difficult to make them betray UMNO, does it? Instead of barking unnecessarily, empty-vessel Azmin Ali should go back and read some tactics and strategies from the playbook of his mentor Mahathir.
