There ain’t such thing as a free lunch, let alone a free dinner. But prime-minister-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim refuses to listen to the Election Commission, let alone a NGO such as Bersih 2.0. Instead, Mr. Anwar had whacked and threatened both not to go overboard in shackling him, arguing there was nothing wrong with free concert, free dinner or free access to military camp.

Both Election Commission and Bersih have been slammed by Anwar strong supporters for being petty and making a mountain out of a molehill. After all, what is so wrong to finally have a more comfortable campaign session with all-paid-delicious-dinner thrown in? The villains have been defeated and it’s only natural to enjoy the fruits after 20 years of “Reformasi”.

Actually, if Mr. Anwar had campaigned in Port Dickson as if he was in the opposition, people would probably like him better. Without free dinner, free concert, free online-tuition, free government machinery, people would probably appreciate him more as a future leader who is humble, trustworthy and genuinely despises corruption. But then he would not enjoy a campaign fit for a king, would he?

Port Dickson By-Election - Anwar Ibrahim Campaign

Fine, if his party – PKR (People’s Justice Party) – has the necessary internal funding to throw a grand party to welcome its president back to parliament, 20 years since he was sacked from the government, then by all means give away the free concert, free dinner and whatnot. Unlike DAP, however, PKR obviously fails to convince the people they are different from the corrupt UMNO once in power.

Apparently, the defiant prime-minister-in-waiting Anwar Ibahim decided to go against critics and attended a controversial dinner last night in Port Dickson. Initially, the organiser said the 380-table dinner was not a “free event” in retaliation against arguments that a free dinner constituted to bribery. Such stunt is no different than UMNO’s free dinner to buy votes.

The event’s organising committee treasurer Yong Yee Seng and Chairperson Wong Chee Swee claimed attendees paid RM60 each. However, according to Malaysiakini portal, it was discovered that some attendees had received free tickets. Turns out, someone who was a great admirer of Anwar had splashed between RM300 and RM400 per table and gives away the tickets.

Anyway, the so-called ticketing system was just a gimmick as every Tom, Dick and his hamster could walk in and out without having their tickets checked. When grilled, Mr. Wong, who happens to be Lukut’s Kuan Ti temple committee member, conveniently said some employers paid for the tables and sponsored the free dinner for their employees.

But the biggest problem with the dinner was not because it was free and smells fishy. The free dinner has raised eyebrows because Mr. Anwar showed up at the controversial dinner and sat together with an underworld gangster – “Heavenly King” Tee Yam @ Koo Tee Kam. Mr. Wong, along with Mr. Koo waited at the entrance to greet Anwar, as he arrived to a lively lion dance performance.

You don’t need a rocket scientist to tell that the main sponsor of the free dinner was none other than the so-called “businessman” Koo. Coincidently, this was the same mafia king who had tried sucking up to Mahathir Mohamad back in June by planning a grand birthday party for the 93-year-old man prime minister. PM Mahathir had eventually ditched the celebration, which would cost 200-table at the HXC Grand Ballroom, ICC Pudu.

Bukit Bintang Night Club

As one of four “Heavenly Kings” controlling the country’s triads, prostitutions, drug, night clubs, gambling, extortions and whatnot, Koo Tee Kam owned the “vice territory” of Bukit Bintang area. Also known as Ah Lek or Pai Kah Lek, because he walks with a limp, the triad boss had served as an advisor for several Chinese bodies including several Chinese guilds in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

Disguised as a generous philanthropist, Tee Yam @ Koo Tee Kam was a “powerful and influential” figure in both the “white and dark” worlds. In 2005, he made headlines when he was released from the Simpang Renggam detention centre where he was held for 17 months without trial under the Emergency Ordinance 1969. He was rearrested almost immediately.

However, his rearrest was short-lived as he spent only three days under detention at Bukit Aman after his lawyer – Muhammad Shafee Abdullah – managed to “fix” the problem. Yes, Shafee is the same lawyer currently representing ex-premier Najib Razak in a massive criminal breach of trust (CBT), money laundering and abuse of power charges in relation to 1MDB scandal.

In 2013, Koo  escaped death when a bomb strapped below his Jaguar exploded as his driver were driving by Taman Taynton View in Cheras. It was a chaotic world back then. Crime watchdog MyWatch co-founder S. Gobi Krishnan had alleged that drug gangs were renting out firearms for as little as RM300 for three hours and supplying bullets at just 80 sen each.

Amusingly, the underworld boss Koo was stripped of his datukship by the Sultan of Pahang for “tarnishing the image of the award” after his detention under Emergency Ordinance, only to be awarded a more prestigious “Dato Sri” title by the same sultanate in 2013, a disgrace to the nine monarchies in the country who have been known to sell royal titles in exchange for money.

Believed to be worth more than RM1 billion in assets, the gangster chief is feared to be shifting his focus on Anwar after failed to bootlick Mahathir. So, why the heck the prime-minister-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim needs to sit at the same dinner table with a triad boss who owns more than 25 night clubs, gambling dens, prostitutions and other underworld business?

It appears Anwar has shot his own foot thanks to his own stubbornness and defiance. In fact, his free 380-table dinner drama is worse than Najib Razak’s 5,500-table mega dinner held at PKFZ (Port Klang Free Zone) in 2013 where Bond girl Michelle Yeoh was busy soliciting votes for the prime minister. Between actress Michelle Yeoh and gangster Koo Tee Kam, Anwar obviously has made a grave mistake.

Sure, Anwar can claim he didn’t know that the mafia boss would be at the same main table hosting him. He can even claim ignorance and sabotage over the dinner fiasco. But his credibility and reputation will definitely take a hit. The fact that there were no prominent DAP leaders at the dinner speaks volumes that they knew something was wrong with the event. Sadly, Anwar didn’t realise what has he gotten into.

Does anyone still remember Anwar and Lim Goh Tong saga? It’s not surprising that he’s been doing this kind of thing since long ago.
