In July, Kylie Jenner became the youngest person on the Forbes list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women with an estimated net worth of US$900 million. And she’s just 20 years old. The American reality television personality, model, entrepreneur and social media celebrity is the founder and owner of cosmetic company Kylie Cosmetics.
She created a line of clothing – “Kendall & Kylie” – together with her sister Kendall in 2012. Born in 1997, she also released a mobile app that reached number one on the iTunes App Store. In 2014 and 2015, Time magazine listed the Jenner sisters as the most influential teens in the world, thanks to their influence among teens on social media.
The most junior member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, her cosmetic empire started with its famous US$29 lip liner and lipstick “lip kits” has since expanded into eye shadow, highlighter, eyeliner and more. Kylie Cosmetics has sold more than US$630 million worth of makeup since its founding in February 2016. The best part is she owns 100% of the company.
As of today, with over 110 million followers from her 5,536 posts, she is one of the top 10 most followed people on Instagram. Forbes actually predicts that she will become the youngest self-made billionaire ever. According to the 2018 Instagram Rich List compiled by Hopper HQ, Kylie Jenner is the highest paid celebrity influencer on the social media platform.
US$1,000,000 – that’s how much Kylie Jenner makes for every sponsored post on her Instagram. In essence, she makes more than David Beckham, who makes only US$300,000 per sponsored post. She is followed closely by singer Selena Gomez, who gets US$800,000 per sponsored post. Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, at third place, earns US$750,000.
According to Influencer marketing agency Mediakix, Instagram’s influencer market is worth US$1 billion and by 2019, that figure would double. The fastest growing influencer marketing platforms are Instagram, Instagram Stories, Facebook, and YouTube. Large influencers are defined as accounts with more than 100,000 Instagram followers and/or at least 300,000 subscribers on YouTube.
The rule of thumb, according to Forbes in 2017, was for every 100,000 Instagram followers, an influencer can command US$5,000 per sponsored post in partnership with a company or brand. Multi-billion dollar companies such as Unilever has a marketing budget of more than US$8.1 billion so there are tons of money for social media stars to make money.
Naturally, celebrities dominate the social media as highest paid influencers. And 7 out of top-10 highest paid influencers / celebrities on Instagram are Americans. But having millions of followers does not guarantee highest rate. Other factors such as engagement, industry and how influential they are play critical roles in determining how much advertisers are willing to pay.
