If Selangor falls, it means the majority of the Malay community wanted a Taliban state. If Penang falls, it means the ethnic Chinese in the state deserved to be oppressed and bullied by the radical and extremist Perikatan Nasional for not going out to vote. If Negeri Sembilan falls, it means extremism and racism have spread to a cancerous level in the country – game over for the Malaysian economy.

Either way, the Ringgit will drop like a rock if any of the three ruling Pakatan Harapan-led states falls today (August 12). Likewise, if the three states could be retained convincingly, the currency would skyrocket. And in case Anwar factor could capture any of the opposition-held states of Kedah, Kelantan or Terengganu, investors will have even more confidence.

With Indian support for Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional currently stands at 75% and Chinese at 95%, the support of the minority ethnic for the Unity Government has already been secured. The unknown factor is whether both coalitions, once bitter rivals, would see their supporters help each other to win big, delivering a painful message to Opposition Perikatan Nasional.

Azmin Ali - Desperate

Analysts and pro-Perikatan fanatics argue that there will be limited transferability of votes between Pakatan and Barisan. UMNO-Malay and DAP-Chinese will find it hard to deliver votes to each other, they said. Actually, that’s not entirely true. Till 2008 General Election, the ethnic Chinese in the country had been delivering votes to the Malay nationalist party since independence in 1957.

The Malays of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) might not necessarily give their votes to enemy Perikatan Nasional – comprising Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Bersatu) and Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) – just because they have been brainwashed to be suspicious of DAP (the largest non-Malay component party in the unity government).

The progressive Malays in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan would most likely vote for liberal Pakatan Harapan than radical Perikatan Nasional, or they could choose not to vote at all. That’s because they understood the importance of political stability and economic prosperity, vital ingredients to the bread and butter. Only the young voters were willing to take risks by voting for the opposition.

Malaysia General Election - Malay Voters

Therefore, Perikatan Nasional’s gamble was to capture young Malay votes through lies and fake news. That’s why Azmin Ali, the traitor who defected from PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) and caused the collapse of previous Pakatan Harapan government in 2020, chose to run away to Hulu Kelang instead of defending his Bukit Antarabangsa seat, which he had represented for 3 terms since 2008.

After having lost the Gombak parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election last November, disgraced Azmin cannot afford to lose in today’s state election. In fact, he was so terrified of losing that he hoped the 86% ethnic Malay in Hulu Kelang could save him. Bukit Antarabangsa has only 47% ethnic Malay, with 40% ethnic Chinese ready to slaughter him left, right and centre.

However, Azmin’s calculation may backfire spectacularly. Not only he could lose, but he would lose it to a girl. There’s a reason PKR president and PM Anwar Ibrahim sent Wanita PKR deputy chief Juwairiya Zulkifli to contest against Azmin. Mr Anwar wanted a junior PKR female candidate to slaughter and humiliate the heavyweight, who happens to be Selangor’s Perikatan Nasional chairman.

Anwar Ibrahim and Azmin Ali

In his campaign rally, Anwar has again urged Hulu Kelang constituents to punish traitors, obviously referring to his former trusted lieutenant-turned-traitor. The PKR president has made Hulu Kelang his personal battlefield to end Azmin’s political career once and for all. At the same time, desperado Azmin is betting all his chips to win in order to rejuvenate his political career.

But the freezing of Perikatan Nasional accounts – suspected of engaging in corruption and money laundering – have restricted the opposition’s ability to spend lavishly in the election campaign and to buy votes, the same way young Malay voters were bribed in the Nov 2022 national polls. The “green wave” isn’t strong enough to help Azmin redeems himself.

In the same breath, supporters of Pakatan Harapan could not wait to teach the traitor for the second time. They still remember his betrayal and treachery role in the infamous “Sheraton Move”. Even if Selangor falls, which is unlikely, they wanted to make sure Azmin Ali is buried first. Azmin might have forgotten that Hulu Kelang consists of urban Malays, not gullible Malay villagers.
