After boasting on January 13 how its active users breached the 500 million milestones, thanks to WhatsApp new privacy policy, Telegram happily blasted another notification to its users on January 29. It claims over 100 million new users joined Telegram in January 2021 alone, seeking more privacy and freedom. But bragging was not the reason Telegram sent its latest message.

Telegram knew that while 100 million new users have installed the app, almost all of them are still using WhatsApp as their preferred messaging service. Users rushed to install not only Telegram, but other apps like Signal – as secondary or backup solution. Besides, WhatsApp, shocked by the retaliations, has postponed its plan to force users to accept its new privacy terms.

In its initial privacy policy update on Jan 5, WhatsApp issued an ultimatum to its 2 billion users – either accept its latest terms and conditions by Feb 8, or be unable to use the world’s most popular messaging service. After criticisms, however, WhatsApp owner Mark Zuckerberg says a new business options will be made available on May 15, 2021.

Telegram Skyrockets To 500 Million Active Users Over WhatsApp Dissatisfaction

Essentially, Dubai-based Telegram Messenger has until May 15 to convince its 500 million users to actively use the app – slowly abandon WhatsApp. Pavel Durov, founder of the Telegram, understood very well that people who downloaded Telegram (and Signal for that matter) will continue to use WhatsApp in hopes for a change of policy at the eleventh hour.

Others who are not concerned about privacy might argue they have no secret to share with WhatsApp and it will be too much hassle to migrate to other apps. Yes, the biggest problem with new users who wanted to use Telegram as de-facto messaging app was the potential loss of thousands and years of chat history – especially videos and documents, which could be important to the business community.

But it appears Telegram has quickly delivered the solution. In its latest message to the 500 million users, it specifically said that “starting today”, everyone can bring their chat history – including videos and documents – to Telegram from apps like WhatsApp, Line and KakaoTalk. It also claims that the migration or transfer of chat history works both for individual chats and groups.

Now, after we had tried the process of moving the chat history using the “export and import” method, it’s safe to conclude it works very well for individual chats. However, for group chats, there are various types of issues encountered. On top of its ability to migrate messages from WhatsApp to Telegram, the latest version of Telegram also allows users to delete messages they send and receive for both sides – without a trace. Besides unique features like greeting stickers, Telegram allows users to report spam and other fake groups or channels, not to mentionimproved voice chats.
