After the embarrasing handling of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 crisis, one would expect Malaysian Government to learn its lesson well and be more transparent when dealing with future issues especially when it involves foreign affairs. But from the way Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Anifah Aman lies in the latest scandal which could sour the Malaysia-New Zealand relationship, perhaps you can’t teach an old dog new tricks after all.

The Malaysian diplomat to New Zealand accused of burglary and assault with the intent to rape – each of which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years – has been revealed as Muhammad Rizalman bin Ismail, 38, who holds the military rank of warrant officer and was a staff assistant with a defence portfolio at the Malaysian high commission.

At a press conference today, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Anifah Aman initially tried to play dumb and twisting facts, and gave his version of the story as if Najib administration was innocent. Anifah claimed that New Zealand authorities offered Rizalman the “alternative” to go home. Anifah said that Malaysia was willing to waive the diplomat’s immunity but decided to take up New Zealand’s offer to invoke diplomatic immunity and bring him back home.

Amusingly, New Zealand Government retaliated by disclosing official documents which tell a differing story. Apparently New-Zealand documents, obtained by Fairfax Media under the Official Information Act, clearly show the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote to the Malaysian high commission in Wellington asking it to “waive diplomatic immunity” for Muhammad Rizalman bin Ismail.

In return, Malaysian high commission replied that not only they refused to waive immunity, but also (has the cheek to) sought to “seal the police file” on the case and “withdraw all charges” – obviously trying to sweep the case under the carpet. Malaysian high commission also decided to repatriated their diplomat back home as soon as possible.

Malaysian high commission also threw in a sweetener – that it will ensure Rizalman does not return to New Zealand in in the future, should the Kiwi authorities agree to the suggested proposal. Obviously, Najib administration must have thought that New Zealand government must be a bunch of fools. But considering how Prime Minister John Key only acted “aggresively” upon public pressure presently, perhaps the Kiwi government wasn’t that smart after all.

According to his facebook profile, Muhammad Rizalman bin Ismail has three children – a toddler and two primary students. His wife, a nurse, is from Terengganu. She is formerly a student at College of Nursing in Kuala Lumnpur. Rizalman and his family is believed to have returned to Malaysia on May 22, 2014 at 1.15pm by Malaysian Airlines flight MH130 – according to the exposed document written by Malaysian high commission.

Malaysian Defence Ministry (Mindef) claimed that it had established a Board of Inquiry (BOI) to investigate Muhammad Rizalman Ismail upon his return from New Zealand. However, knowing how Malaysian authorities under the present UMNO-led government works, the normal strategy to be used would be to drag the case as long as possible until it is forgotten by everyone.

Going by the past history of any investigation into such scandals, chances of Rizalman walks away free from any severe punishment is extremely high. Heck, he could even gets a promotion for his “courageous” attempt on the Kiwi woman. The most he could get is probably a friendly nag that he should get smarter the next time he tries his adventure again (tongue-in-cheek*).

Perhaps there’s another solution to this fiasco. Malaysian government can always (quietly) try to “buy the Kiwi woman’s silence”. After all, money talks and bullshit walks. If money can “kautim” (settle) the woman and she decides to drop all the charges and pretend it was just a misunderstanding, who’s New Zealand government to press charges on Rizalman? To hell with rules of law.
