The U.S. President Donald Trump has been scheduled to deliver his message to a Joint Session of Congress on Jan. 29. However, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has another idea. She said – “The date of the State of the Union is not a special date. It’s not constitutionally required, it’s not the president’s birthday, and it’s not anything.”
So, Pelosi told the president to delay his speech. Alternatively, the House speaker told the president to deliver his speech in writing – if Trump was not happy. She argued that due to the government shutdown, the US Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security, both of which are responsible for coordinating and implementing security at the event, have been crippled.
It was, of course, a naughty political strategy to bring the president to his knees, and to humiliate the Commander-in-Chief. The Joint Session of Congress would gather leaders from all three branches of government in the House chamber. Since 1913, presidents have been delivering a speech to Congress as a way of rallying the nation behind their agenda.
Trump has demanded that Democrats, newly empowered in the House of Representatives, gives him US$5.7 billion to build a wall along the southern border as part of legislation to fund the government. Democrats have refused and told the president to reopen the government, arguing that border security and the shutdown should be negotiated separately.
But Donald Trump isn’t someone Nancy Pelosi could easily arm twist without a fight. So, the president did the next best thing to entertain himself – pulled the plug on the Speaker’s aircraft as she was about to leave for her overseas trip. Trump got his revenge when he informed Pelosi that her “public relations” trip to Afghanistan, Egypt and Belgium has been postponed.
Pelosi was furiously mad because it was a huge embarrassment. She and her congressional delegates were actually on the US Air Force bus en route to the airport for the trip using a military aircraft, before being told 1 hour before the departure that they have been grounded. The naughty Trump even told her to fly commercial on her own dime if she still insists on her trip.
Trump wrote to Pelosi – “I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over. In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate.”
Poking fun at Speaker Pelosi, President Trump wrote – “I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown. Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative.”
Congressional lawmakers were left sitting on the bus confused, waiting to see if they could depart. Amid mounting confusion, there were furious calls going back and forth among Capitol Hill, State, Pentagon and White House offices on the abrupt denial of the military aircraft to fly the delegates out of the country. The bus later returned to the Capitol, confirming the trip has been postponed.
Already, the government shutdown, which is now the longest in U.S. history, has left more than 800,000 federal workers and contractors without pay. Government employees are forced to take loans to help pay bills during the federal government shutdown. Although the White House has denied it, obviously Trump’s latest stunt was a retaliation against Pelosi.
An official revealed that “as soon as the president found out about the (Pelosi) trip today, he took immediate action.” The White House justified the interruption to the Speaker’s overseas trip, that if Nancy Pelosy had gone on this trip she would have guaranteed that 800,000 federal workers would not receive their second paycheck because she would not have been in the U.S. to negotiate any kind of deal.
However, Pelosi’s office went ballistic and condemned President Trump’s move, claiming instead that the purpose of the Speaker and her delegates flying to Europe was to meet with allies and “express appreciation & thanks to our men & women in uniform for their service & dedication” Still, she has to suck it up because Trump is still the Commander-in-Chief.
