An otherwise peaceful Saturday was shattered with a series of explosive tweets from President Donald Trump accusing former-President Obama with tapping his phones in Trump Tower prior to the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Trump quickly called it “McCarthyism” and accused the “sick Obama” of having committed Watergate 2.0 scandal.

McCarthyism refers to the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. The term was coined in 1950 in reference to a U.S. Senator – Joseph McCarthy – who was famous for making claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers inside the United States federal government and elsewhere.

Watergate Scandal - President Richard Nixon Resigns - White House

Watergate refers to the scandal in the early 1970s that brought down Republican President Richard Nixon after he ordered a break-in of the Democrat party’s Washington headquarters. In the scandal, Nixon administration had undertaken illegal activities including “dirty tricks” such as bugging the offices of political opponents and people of whom Nixon or his officials were suspicious.

President Trump was leveraging on Fox News to justify his accusation, whereby radio host Mark Levin revealed that as early as June, 2016, the Obama administration filed a request with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) to monitor communications involving Donald Trump and several advisers. The request was denied initially.

Obama, however, didn’t give up and 4 months later in October submitted a new request to the FISA court. The second request to spy on Trump would focus on a computer server in Trump Tower suspected of links to Russian banks – SVB Bank and Alfa Bank. Despite having found no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing, the wiretapping continues for national security reasons – White House argued.

Similar to Nixon’s Watergate scandal, the Obama administration used high-tech surveillance powers of the federal intelligence services such as the FBI, CIA, NSA and even the Treasury Department to eavesdrop and monitor Trump presidential campaign. Obama used the dirty tricks to undermine the Republican candidate’s campaign to win the White House.

Trump Tower Bugged by Barack Obama

But even after secretly spying on Trump team, Obama administration couldn’t find evidence of Donald Trump conspiring with Vladimir Putin. At the end, by January, 2017, outgoing Obama administration simply gave NSA broad new powers to share globally intercepted personal communications with the government’s 16 other intelligence agencies before applying privacy protections.

The new rules essentially means information – satellite transmissions, phone calls, emails, texts – gathered by U.S. most powerful surveillance operations are now unfiltered. This also means that any spy agencies could access intelligence (which is as good as making them public) on all American citizens, and potentially leak such raw data to anyone such as the mainstream media.

Watergate Scandal - Richard Nixon and Barack Obama

Kevin Lewis, a spokesman for Obama was quick to rubbish Trump’s accusation – “Neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.” Ben Rhodes, a former Obama foreign-policy said – “No president can order a wiretap. Those restrictions were put in place to protect citizens from people like you.”

Is Obama really that innocent? As early as 2010, Barack Hussein Obama personally authorized the monitoring of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone. According to WikiLeaks, the NSA targeted 125 phone numbers of top German officials for long-term surveillance, including Merkel’s telephone numbers, her aides, her office and even her fax machine.

Barack Obama Personally Authorized Spying On Angela Merkel

It was not until the spying was exposed that Mr Obama pacified Mrs Merkel that the U.S. NSA has stopped monitoring her, and will not be in future. Instead of apologising, White House and NSA arrogantly claimed that America’s allies, including Germany and France, should be grateful because the surveillance operations also targeted terrorist threats.

Hence, one should not be deceived by Obama, who is a great liar and a master pretender often plays dumb when caught in a scandal. Interestingly, a number of other former Obama administration officials do not deny that such a wiretap existed. They just deny that the White House or Obama himself would have – directly – approved it or ordered it.

FISA Spy Court

They, however, play “tai-chi” and said it could be the Department of Justice that would have sought the FISA court spying on Donald Trump. Indirectly, those ex-Obama officials are confirming Trump’s accusation – that the Obama administration did in fact conduct surveillance on Trump Tower in October and post-election.

Obama’s former speechwriter Jon Favreau, however, tweeted that he would warn reporters against saying there was no wiretap at all. According to Chapter 36 of Title 50 of the US Code “War and National Defence”, Subchapter 1, Section 1802, the U.S. President, through Attorney General, may authorize electronic surveillance without a court order.

Therefore, Ben Rhodes was wrong to say a U.S. president cannot order a wiretap. Everything happens for a reason. The FBI would not suddenly approach FISA for a warrant to spy on a presidential candidate. FBI operates under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Justice who reports to the Attorney General, who in turns serves at the pleasure of the president.

Under FISA, the Justice Department reviews applications for counterintelligence warrants by agencies before submitting them. And the Attorney General must personally approve each final FISA application. Based on the chain of command, there’s little doubt that former President Barack Hussein Obama have had silently instructed Donald Trump to be bugged.

But do you know what the jaw-dropping about the whole scandal is? Despite wiretapping Donald Trump and his entire team, not to mention the Trump Tower building, the whole corrupt institution of Obama White House couldn’t stop the real estate mogul from elected as the 45th President of the United States. Trump would definitely have been stopped from being sworn in if Russian had indeed interfered.
