Four days after the November 3 election, Americans took to the streets – some celebrate Joe Biden’s victory while others protest against Donald Trump’s loss. The nation is as divided, if not more divided, as when Trump stunningly won the White House in 2016. Having passed the 270 Electoral College vote threshold needed, Biden becomes the President-elect of the United States.
International media erupted with predictable headlines, with U.K.’s Sunday Times declaring “Sleepy Joe wakes up America”, clearly mocking Trump’s favourite derogatory nickname for the 77-year-old Biden. Major newspapers in the U.S. and Europe celebrated how 74-year-old Trump finally got dumped. Donald Trump becomes the first president to lose re-election since 1992.
President-elect Biden vows to be president for all Americans. For the business community and stock markets, he may be less friendly, but nonetheless more predictable. It was also a relief that Republican will control the Senate, ready to block Biden’s attempts to raise taxes. But the newly elected POTUS has already prepared to reverse Trump’s policies on his first day in the Oval Office.
Biden is expected to use “Executive Orders” to rescind the “Muslim ban” imposed by the Trump administration to restrict travel to the U.S. from countries like Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. He also plans to reinstate protections for illegal immigrants and implement a temporary moratorium on deportations in order to review the deportation system.
Mr Biden plans to restore U.S. support for the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) and rejoin the Paris Climate Accord, not to mention the restoration of the transatlantic alliance with long-time and traditional European allies. Naturally, European leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Micron were quick to congratulate Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris.
Interestingly, both Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have yet to congratulate Democrat Joe Biden for his victory. It could be a strategy from Beijing and Moscow to tell Biden administration that they are not happy with U.S. economic sanctions on Russia as well as trade disputes with China. It won’t be a walk in the park for “Sleepy Joe”.
To complicate matters, Trump has refused to accept defeat. He spent his time at the golf course on Saturday and Sunday. The U.S. president has vowed to challenge the election results – even pledged to boycott Biden’s inauguration in January in a protest over a “stolen election”, despite wife Melania Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner’s advise for him to concede.
Eventually, Trump has to pack and vacate the Oval Office, but not before pushing for recounts before the deadline on December 8. Already, there were reports that America could plunge into a civil war if Trump continues to pour fuel into the fire. Given the right incentive, his supporters could arm themselves and turn violent easily.
Sure, with votes still being counted, Biden has grabbed over 75 million votes – the highest number for a presidential candidate in history. But at the same time, Trump received close to 71 million votes – the highest total for a losing candidate. The turnout in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election has hit a 50-year high – the highest since 1968.
Even though Biden beat Trump by 4 million votes nationwide, Trump has won the second-highest popular vote in the history of America. In fact, both Biden and Trump have beaten the record set by Barack Obama, who was swept to power based on the famous wave of “HOPE” and 69.5 million votes in 2008. In other words, Trump could even beat Obama.
The fact that 70 million Americans voted for Trump speaks volumes about the influence of Trumpism. Make no mistake. Due largely to Covid-19 pandemic, about 100 million Americans had voted before the Election Day, and out of that number, 63 million voted by mail – more than double the number of mail-in votes during the 2016 election.
Historically, high voter turnout would typically favour Democratic candidates. Therefore, there’s a possibility that Donald Trump may seek re-election in 2024, when Coronavirus is probably over and voters turnout isn’t as high as this year. But could he or would he make a comeback? A narcissist like Trump can never lose face and it’s absolutely possible that he will run again.
The 22nd Amendment of the Constitution states that – “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice”. But obviously the Constitution does not stipulate that those two terms must be held consecutively. Essentially, if a president loses after his first four-year term, he would theoretically be able to run for office again. And it had happened before.
Grover Cleveland served as the U.S. president from 1885-1889, but lost his re-election bid against his Republican opponent, Benjamin Harrison. Four years later, Cleveland ran again for the president and became the 24th president from 1893-1897. Cleveland is the only president in the American history to leave the White House and return for a second term four years later.
The idea that Donald Trump could become the second person after Grover Cleveland to remake history again since 1897 is enough to excite him. After all, in four years, Mr Trump will be 78 years old, only a year older than Joe Biden is right now. Because Cleveland was a Democrat, Trump would be the first Republican to leave the Oval Office and return for a second term – if he wins in 2024.
Like it or not, there does not seem to be a leader as charismatic, outspoken and powerful (according to Trump supporters) as Donald Trump to lead the Republicans. Had there been no Coronavirus, it would be hard for Biden to beat incumbent Trump. Even after he screwed up in managing the pandemic, 70 million Americans did not mind a man who loves to bluff, bombast and blame.

Anything is possible. However, Republicans tend to support the leader of their party. This DOES NOT mean that they are supporting Trump.
Your analysis of Trump popularity is not correct. He’s the most divisive and hatred-incisive leader ever. Many Americans voted for him because of the failures in the country, namely manufacturing job loses, healthcare issues, white being marginalized, homeless problems, drug addiction. Unfortunately, Trump is a mass failure. Nothing he does work. So nobody will remember him in a few months time.

My friend visited San Francisco in January of this year, and he was super shocked to see thousands of homeless people roaring around in the city. Youtube said 10,000. There is even a Web site reporting human poops on streets (and the daily count is shocking).
