A rare Hermès bag has set a new record for the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction – going for HK$1.72 million (US$221,846; £146,000; RM817,225). The luxury crocodile skin 2014 Hermes Birkin bag, in fuchsia, features 18 karat gold detailing encrusted in real diamonds.
The previous most expensive Hermès Birkin was sold for US$203,150 (£133,000; RM748,353) at a Heritage Auctions sale in New York in 2011. However, the most expensive handbag sold at auction stood at US$218,500 (£143,000; RM806,000), for a gold and diamond piece once owned by Elizabeth Taylor, in 2011.
Still, the most expensive Hermès bag to date is thought to be the Himalayan crocodile Birkin sold directly by the French fashion house, for a whopping US$432,000 (£284,000; RM1.6 million). The bag, made of Nilo crocodile, was said to be so expensive due to the painstaking and lengthy hours in its dyeing process, not to mention 240 diamonds and tons of gold feature.
The latest Hermès Birkin bag was sold to an anonymous phone bidder at Christie’s international handbags and accessories auction in Hong Kong. Although the identity of the buyer wasn’t disclosed, Christie’s hinted that the total number of buyers at the auction were overwhelmingly private Asian collectors. Hmm, could the buyer be Auntie Rosy?
Celebrity Victoria Beckham is said to own as many as 100 of such branded bags, which is believed to be worth £1.5 million (US$2.3 million; RM8.5 million). She was perhaps the first celebrity to own the mega-expensive Hermès Himalayan crocodile Birkin, before Kim Kardashian follows. Other celebrities – Pamela Anderson, Lady Gaga, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julia Roberts – are some of Hermès Birkin fans.
Selling at more than US$10,000 a pop for the cheapest range, Birkins are the most sought after bag in the world. Besides being made to be worn and carried and photographed, Birkins are really a good investment, just like Rolexes. A “carefully used” one typically fetches between 80% and 120% (or more) of what the previous owner paid for it.
Among the politicians, nobody beats Rosmah Mansor, the beautiful wife of Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, when comes to owning Hermès Birkin bags. Rosmah, who allegedly has been saving since young and up till today, also has great tastes for designers such as Roberto Cavalli and Pucci (Italy), Joel (London); and jewellers like Jacob (New York), Lorenzo (Italy), Samir Halimeh (New York) and Taher (Dubai).
While it’s unknown if Auntie Rosy has more Birkins than Victoria Beckham, there’s one thing for sure – money is definitely not a problem here. The former “Spice Girls” member known as “Posh Spice” has amassed wealth of more than US$300 million (£195 million; RM1.1 billion) on her own. But that figure pales in comparison to PM Najib’s 1MDB pet project, which has successfully accumulated RM42 billion (US$11.4 billion; £7.4 billion) in debt.
Like it or not, Rosmah’s collection of Birkins could turn into a goldmine, if rare designs are part of it. It seems she’s not such a lavish spender after all. She knows what she’s doing, as far as Birkins investment is concerned. Who knows, when the country goes bust, her high value fashion and jewellery acquisitions could be used to save the nation.
So, stop criticising about her luxury shopping (*grin*). On the contrary, Rosmah should be encouraged to buy more rare luxury items. The ROI (return on investments) for Hermès Birkin bags is better than stocks, currencies and even gold. Heck, it’s even better than real estate investment. When was the last time you heard about “Hermès Birkin Bubble”?
