Just when you thought the latest ceasefire between Hamas and Israel would last and thereafter bring peace to the conflict zone, it was breached, again. About 8-hours before the expiration of ceasefire, three Grad rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip and fell near Be’er Sheva and Netivot. Loud explosions were heard in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, while Code Red sirens blared throughout southern and central Israel.
Hamas proudly claimed responsibility for firing about 50 rockets, among them M-75 and Fajr-5 rockets at Jerusalem, not to mention J-80 missile at Ben Gurion Airport. At least 2 hit open areas in the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council, 4 more in open areas in the Eshkol Regional Council, and 5 hit open areas in the Be’er Sheva area. Israel’s Iron Dome was put to work again intercepting the attack from Hamas.
Israel also reported that 1 rocket was intercepted over central Israel while another fell in an open area, 2 each over Ashkelon, Hof Ashkelon, Sderot, Be’er Sheva, Kiryat Malachi and 3 over the Ashdod area. The fact that Hamas chose to attack Israel hours before a supposedly new ceasefire deal was expected to be signed in Cairo, shows Hamas was not interested in any peaceful plan at all.
But when even this latest attack was not urgent enough to force President Obama to interrupt his present vacation, why did he made a sudden halt on his vacation for a 48-hours emergency return to Washington, before resuming it on Martha’s Vineyard? People are equally puzzled why he came back in the first place, and in the process wasted taxpayers’ $1.1 million (£660,000, RM3.5 million) for the round-trip.
It couldn’t be any sudden secret meeting with foreign leader, and there wasn’t any economic crisis whatsoever. In fact, Obama can do practically everything on the Vineyard, as procedures and protocols were designed in such that the POTUS could work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, wherever he happens to be. And since he wasn’t flying aboard Air Force One means the country wasn’t nuked yet (*grin*).
Obama rarely interrupts his vacations. Sure, the 2012 federal budget crisis did interrupt Washington and spook Wall Street, as well as his Hawaii holiday. But he didn’t return to Washington when the Egypt government crisis erupted. He also made sure his golf session wasn’t interrupted even when Russian invaded Ukraine earlier this year.
Hence, the only issue that could attract President Obama’s attention is domestic problems. Perhaps the answer could be found when both “Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder” flew from Vineyard to DC together. In Washington, Obama held separate meetings with his national security team and, of course, Eric Holder. White House also released photos of Obama having discussions with Holder as well as Missouri Governor Jay Nixon.
So, it seems the crisis in Ferguson is getting worse and could explode to a full blown racial riots if the situation is not contained. The problem is serious enough for Attorney General Eric Holder to send a message to the people of Ferguson. And it certainly doesn’t help when people were happily looting and throwing bottles of urine at the police, while President Obama was having fun at Vineyard.
Entering the 9th night of unrest since unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was shot dead by a white police officer on August 9, Governor Jay Nixon has since authorized the deployment of National Guard. Still, it doesn’t prevent fresh clashes between the police and protesters. Tons of tear gas were fired and the air smells like gun powder, instead of tear gas. It seems nothing short of police officer Darren Wilson’s arrest would bring back calm to the mostly black community here.
