Donald Trump has finally conceded and for the first time, acknowledged that President-elect Joe Biden’s administration will be inaugurated on January 20, but not before creating a huge mess by inciting his supporters to storm and take over the U.S. Capital building. Even with 13 days left in his term, the U.S. president was probably terrified by the prospect of being charged.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin said the Department of Justice will consider lodging criminal charges against anyone who played a role in the riot. Thousands of Trump supporters were encouraged by the president to march to the U.S. Capitol in what appeared to be a last attempt to stop President-Elect Joe Biden from being confirmed by the Congress.

The invasion of the Capitol building, a powerful symbol of the country’s democracy, has shocked and embarrass both Republicans and Democrats. Five people have died in the storming. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, one of Trump’s staunchest allies, said – “I’m not worried about the next election, I’m worried about getting through the next 14 days.”

The fears that Trump could incite more violence in his final days has again prompted the possibility of impeachment. In fact, the Commander-in-Chief has been considered a “threat to national security”, so much so that the 25th Amendment – a provision in the Constitution that allows the vice president, with support from majority of the cabinet, to remove a sitting president – was floated.

Jim Mattis, Trump’s first secretary of defense, said – “Today’s tyranny, an effort to subjugate America’s democracy by mob rule, was fomented and directed by Mr. Trump”. After the attack on the U.S. Capitol, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao became the first Cabinet member to resign, followed by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

The mob assault on the U.S. Capitol, perhaps the first since August 24, 1814, when British soldiers led by Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cockburn entered the building by force and set fire, has exposed the lack of security and vulnerabilities of the American symbol for all the world to see. Clearly, the Department of Homeland Security has done a horrible job.

Gary Locke, former U.S. Ambassador to China, said the “deplorable” Capitol Hill riot has likely damaged American standing around the globe. He said – “China is laughing at us and saying we’re not the model of democracy and of civility and of stability that we have always been lecturing the rest of the world to embrace,”

Indeed, as the violence unfolded, Chinese netizens had labelled the riot “karma”. The Global Times mocked it as “double standards” among US politicians who expressed support for Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters, who forced their way into the territory’s Legislative Council in 2019. It said – “In Hong Kong, violent actions are described as a ‘beautiful sight,’ in the US, people involved in this chaos are called ‘mobs’,”
