He had abruptly removed former acting Attorney General Sally Yates and former U.S. attorney Preet Bharara. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump terminated FBI Director James Comey, also in a similar fashion. The sudden sacking of Comey is a big deal because this is the second time a FBI director is fired in U.S. history.
The first time a FBI director was sacked happened 24 years ago in 1993, when President Bill Clinton fired William Sessions (who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan) for his refusal to voluntarily step down amid ethical concerns. Clinton, at the recommendation of his attorney general, Janet Reno, dismissed Sessions.
Comey didn’t see it coming, and was stunned when he saw his dismissal on TV while speaking inside the FBI office in Los Angeles. It was indeed humiliating. Trump who had initially decided to keep the FBI director didn’t care to give him a heads-up call. The president sent his long-time private security guard to deliver the termination letter in a manila folder to FBI headquarters.
In his letter to Comey, President Trump said he had acted under the recommendation of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Trump said while he appreciates that Comey told him he was not under investigation – for three times – the sacking was necessary because the FBI director is not able to effectively lead the bureau.
In reality, of course, Mr. Trump had wanted to fire Mr. Comey on the same day he sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. James Comey’s incompetence as the FBI chief is breathtaking. Although he could not be trusted, it would be highly inappropriate if the U.S. president sacks the FBI director at the early hour of his presidency.
From the moment he screws up in his handling of Clinton scandal, the FBI director was game over. In July, 2016, Comey announced that the FBI will not recommend criminal charges against Hillary Clinton for her use of email while serving as secretary of state. The FBI director merely remarked that Clinton was “extremely careless” in storing classified information on her private email server.
Case was closed with a slap on the wrist when Clinton should have had been charged and probably put behind bars. People were outraged on a conspiracy among President Barack Obama, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch and FBI Director James Comey (who was appointed by Obama) to protect Hillary Clinton – giving her presidential campaign a boost.
Suddenly, while Hillary was on her campaign plane to campaign in Iowa, the FBI director made a surprise announcement that the agency was “reopening the email case” and would once again be examining emails related to Clinton’s time as Secretary of State – just 11 days to the election. Apparently, the world hadn’t seen the last comical stunt from Mr. Comey.
With a day left before the 2016 Presidential Election on November 8, the U.S. prestigious FBI stunningly told the world that not only they managed to review the 650,000 emails; Director Comey has also cleared Hillary Clinton. For the first time in the history of America, a U.S. presidential candidate – Hillary Clinton had been investigated, and cleared – twice!
The straw that broke the camel’s back was when it was clear that Comey has every intention of bringing Trump down. During testimony to Congress last month, Comey flatly rejected Trump’s explosive claim that he was wiretapped by his predecessor. When Comey admits in front of the Senate that the FBI was investigating his campaign, Trump exploded in anger.
But Trump only went ballistic when he learns that the FBI director was asking for more money from newly installed Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, suggesting that Comey was seeking additional fund to expand the investigation into Trump’s inner circle and its ties to Russia. If there was wiretapping already, what is there to stop FBI from fabricating evidence against Trump?
True, the timing is bad and everybody sees that the firing of Comey is related to the FBI investigation of Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia and apparently it’s getting too close for comfort. However, at the same time, Trump knows that to many Americans, Democrats will look hypocritical defending Comey now after trashing him so incessantly.
Hillary Clinton has been – and is still – blaming FBI Director James Comey for destroying her chance to become the first U.S. woman president. Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader who had once declared – “I do not have confidence in him (Comey) any longer” – is now singing a different tune, saying Mr. Trump’s firing of Comey was a mistake.
If Hillary Clinton had won last year’s presidential election, Director Comey would have been fired immediately and the same Democrats that are criticizing President Trump’s decision today would be dancing in the streets. Schumer is calling for a special prosecutor in the Russia probe. Will he accept a suggestion to appoint a special prosecutor in the Clinton email probe as well?
Maxime Waters – a 13-term Democrat from Los Angeles who has been calling for Trump’s impeachment but was so ignorant that she thought Russian President Vladimir Putin had invaded Korea (instead of Crimea) – has also shared her displeasure at President Trump firing FBI Director James Comey. But her explanation was equally mind-boggling.
Waters said – “I think that if the president would have fired him when he first came in, he would not have to be in a position now where he is trying to make up a story about why.” However, when asked if she’s okay if it was Clinton who has fired Comey, she says – “If she had won the White House, I believe that given what he did to her, and what he tried to do, she should have fired him. Yes,”
So, a long-time Democrat Congresswoman who initially believed FBI Director Comey had lost his credibility after flip-flopping on Clinton email scandal, now thinks it’s outrageous for Trump to fire him but perfectly alright for Clinton to do the same? This is the part which I like about Donald Trump trapping the hypocrite Democrats.
There’s no mystery behind Comey’s removal. The only mystery is how Trump did it. He deliberately mentioned in the letter, knowing that it would be made public, that Comey had told him that he wasn’t under investigation – three times. Trump has just declared to all and sundry that he was innocent. The TV-reality star has basically put Comey on the spot.
After Trump fired the FBI director, which is long overdue, he casually meets Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. The Democratic Party and liberal mainstream media are going bananas. Days ago, they were all talking about how Comey needs to be fired because of how he was mistreating Hillary. And now Comey gets fired, all of a sudden they do a 180º. That’s how Trump trolls those people.
