If you’re on diet or have severe obesity problem, you should stop reading this article. But hey, it’s Friday and your morale skyrocket to the roof while your appetite tells you to forget about calories for the day. You make a promise to double your time at gym but in case you couldn’t, it’s KFC’s problem, not yours. KFC Korea has just unveiled a new delicious offering – the Zinger Double Down King (*yummy*).
The new menu went on sale on 18 October and cost a whopping £4 (US$6.40; RM21) for a-la carte or £7 (US11.20; RM37) for the meal set. As mouth-watering as it looks, the sexy and juicy Zinger Double Down is packed with 750 calories. That’s a decent amount of calories considering you’re whacking three huge pieces of meat. There’s no bun, obviously, but features a bacon-topped beef patty sandwiched between two fried spicy chicken fillet “buns” – with barbecue and white pepper sauces.
In case you didn’t know, the original double down concept was launched in the US in 2010, with the bread buns being replaced by chicken fillets. Offered for a limited time in an attempt to test the market, the concept was an instant hit then. The TV commercial advertisement was equally innovative, which says it has “so much 100 percent premium chicken, we didn’t have room for a bun.”
Soon, the double down hit Canada, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa but (strangely) never in UK. It was so successful that Canadians consumed about two million Double Down sandwiches in less than two months when it was introduced in 2011. New Zealand KFC’s sold more than 16,000 of the Double Down in the first three hours that they were available, with more than 600,000 sold over an initial five-week promotional period.
Restaurant Brands chief executive Russel Creedy said the company would “definitely consider” bringing the Double Down King to New Zealand if there was sufficient customer demand for it. KFC Australia meanwhile hinted they have something else up their sleeves so this monster may not enter the land of kangaroo. But since every country had their own version of double down previously, Zinger Double Down King could be packaged differently.
But do we really need another heart attack 750 calories monster, when the previous double down’s 540 calories, 30 grams of fat, and 1,740mg of sodium was already such a deadly weapon of mass destruction? What’s next – add another piece of “Filet-O-Fish”, double the beef patty and couple of cheeses plus hash brown? And perhaps some “kimchi”? But frankly, we still love to try out Zinger Double Down King, just once – we promise (*grin*).
