What’s the difference between Anwar Ibrahim and Benjamin Netanyahu? When Anwar promises – repetitively – to fight corruption, laugh him off. It is just empty rhetoric to scam voters. When Netanyahu promises – even once – to hunt down terrorist masterminds who committed the October 7th massacre, pay attention. It is a serious commitment to slaughter enemies. This is not a pro-Israeli propaganda. This is reality.

As early as December 2013, Netanyahu publicly made known of his order for Israel’s top spy agencies to hunt down Hamas leaders around the globe in revenge of the October 7 attack. He said – “I have instructed the Mossad to act against the heads of Hamas wherever they are.” Then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, meanwhile, said Hamas leaders were living on “borrowed time.”

In fact, during an interview with Fox News in June 2025, Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Israel under his leadership would not simply attempt to dismantle Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes through military attacks, but in the process usher in regime change in Tehran. Many did not take him seriously and the Ayatollah laughed him off.

Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - Killed in Air Strike

On Saturday (February 28, 2026), slightly more than 2 years after the Hamas attack, and the same day the United States and Israel launched a coordinated and synchronized military strike on Iran, the invincible Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed. He died the same way dozens of Iranian top leaders, commanders, scientists, generals, proxies and whatnot were terminated – as promised by Netanyahu.

You live by the sword, you die by the sword. And Khamenei is joining a long list of those assassinated and butchered by the Jewish state for making the biggest mistake of attacking Israel. It was an existential threat. And the (dead) Iranian Supreme Leader pays the price, suffering the same fate as numerous top officials in Hamas, Hezbollah and even Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including Haniyeh, Nasrallah, and Sinwar.

Initially, Tehran tried to hide the death of Ali Khamenei. But as the top cleric in the country, the regime can’t be seen as disrespecting Khamenei by denying him the funeral that the Islamic religion requires within 24 hours of death. They also need to announce his death to try making Khamenei into a martyr – the final production value he could be used as part of the regime propaganda.

However, Khamenei was not alone as more than 40 top Iranian leaders were also killed in the U.S.-Israel military operation on Saturday. Amusingly, the Ayatollah had trashed and ridiculed the U.S. military in a series of social media posts about a week before the strikes that killed him. He had no idea that the U.S. second direct military attack on Iran would be his last.

Top generals in Tehran, already demoralized at the biggest American air power buildup since the 2003 Iraq invasion, thought the Jews-Americans would strike at midnight, when there is cover of darkness. Instead, the first missile struck the compound of Ali Khamenei at 9:55am Tehran time. As many as 29 more missiles followed shortly after. Within minutes, the presidential palace is Pasteur Square was gone.

Then, the Parliament building in Baharestan Square, followed by the Ministry of Intelligence headquarters on Nejatollahi Street. Next was the Defence Ministry, the National Security Council headquarters, the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) command centres across the capital. By late on Saturday night, Donald Trump announced that 86-year-old Khamenei was dead. His daughter-in-law and son-in-law were also killed.

Israel Fighter Jet - Preparing for Mission

More than 200 fighter jets surged into Iranian air space as strikes were launched across the country. IRGC naval bases along the Persian Gulf coast were struck, as were missile production facilities in Qom, Karaj, Kermanshah and Bushehr. Mohamad Pakpour, the IRGC chief, and Ali Shamkhani, a top security adviser to Khamenei, as well as defence minister Amir Nasirzadeh were killed.

Israeli and U.S. military intelligence had long watched and waited for a rare opportunity – senior political and military leaders in Iran holding a meeting – where they could all be killed at once. The day finally came on Saturday (February 28). Intelligence officers had identified not just one meeting but three. And they had a fix on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s top decision maker and spiritual leader.

The golden moment was so unique that U.S. and Israeli warplanes struck not only in full daylight, but Israeli jets dropped 30 bombs on Khamenei’s compound alone, leaving it scorched and shattered. The attack after sunrise, just as practicing Muslims began the daylong fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, was a “tactical surprise” compared to Israel’s previous attack late at night on Iran last June.

The best part was, Trump continued to use the same tactic to hoodwink the Iranian regime, saying publicly that he would rather cut a deal than attack. The U.S. team deliberately pushed tough demands – Iran would have to dismantle its nuclear facilities, turn over its stockpile of uranium and give up nuclear enrichment, none of which were acceptable to Iran.

Trump got on the phone on Thursday with his two envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, just a day before the decision to strike. The Commander-in-Chief was told the talks had gone badly – Tehran wasn’t willing to end its nuclear enrichment or dismantle its missile program. Worse, the U.S. also received intelligence that Iran considered attacking American targets before Trump authorized strikes.

That further confirmed for Trump that he had one option left. The attack which began in the morning saw about 200 Israeli fighters had struck close to 500 different targets – the largest single air campaign in Israel’s history. U.S. forces struck hundreds of targets of their own and defended against hundreds of Iranian missile and drone attacks.

Israeli strikes focused on high-value officials and Iran’s missile capabilities, while the U.S. attacks went after missile infrastructure and military targets. At the same time, Israel hit Iran with broad cyberattacks that targeted media and hacked phone apps used widely in Iran to track prayer times with messages calling on Iranians to rise up against their government.

But there’s one huge difference between this strike compared to June 2025’s attack on Iran. President Trump launched a major air attack in Iran with the help of Anthropic’s Claude AI tool, just within hours of declaring that the federal government will end its use of artificial-intelligence tools made by tech company Anthropic. This is not the first time the U.S. used AI in military operation.

Claude, the AI model developed by Anthropic, was used successfully by the U.S. military during its operation to kidnap Nicolás Maduro from Venezuela. Commands around the world, including U.S. Central Command in the Middle East, use Anthropic’s Claude AI tool for intelligence assessments, target identification and simulating battle scenarios.

Besides all the intelligence, tactical surprises, AI tools, and decisive decision-making, the U.S. military also used a devastating technique called “time on target” – where multiple weapons, such as cruise missiles, rockets, or aircraft, coordinate their fire so that all munitions arrive and impact a target at the same time. The primary purpose is to achieve maximum damage by hitting the target instantly, preventing enemy troops from taking cover after the first round lands.

With two aircraft carriers and a fleet of destroyers, they calculated the exact math so that the Israeli jets and the U.S. cruise missiles hit their targets at the exact same second. Using electronic warfare from space, sea and air, the U.S. first blinded the Iranian radar just as destroyers launched a swarm of cruise missiles to wipe out the Iranian air defence systems such as Russian-made S-300.

There were actually two operations on Saturday – Israel’s “Operation Roaring Lion” and the U.S.’ “Operation Epic Fury”. The operations were to target the nerve centre of the Iranian government. With USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea and USS Gerald Ford in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, the IDF has the support to fly all the way across the Middle East to reach Iranian airspace.

While the U.S. and Israeli military machines and missiles were deployed from completely different locations at entirely different times, they arrived to strike the target at the same second for maximum impact. It was designed to be a total systemic shock and explodes at the same time – a move to trigger a collapse of the regime instantly.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it would soon deliver a painful retribution for the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but President Trump has warned that such a retaliation would be met with a heavy response. Trump also said the bombing, launched by sea and air, will continue “uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary.”

When Trump says last June that “We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there – We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now”, the president was not bluffing. Since June 2025, Khamenei has faced severe security breaches, leading him to operate from a secured bunker due to fears of assassination. Still, he can run, but he can’t hide.

For now, temporarily the country’s affairs will be managed by a three-man council consisting of the president, the head of judiciary and a representative of Iran’s Guardian Council. Then the Assembly of Experts, an 88-man council, will choose a successor to become the supreme leader. But whether the new supreme leader would also be killed the same way remains to be seen.

Whether you like or hate Israel, its ability to reach out and kill its mortal enemies has been proven, repeatedly, over the past two years. With and without U.S. assistance, using everything from exploding pagers to precision missiles and bunker busting bombs, Israel has eliminated key opponents in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen and Iran. For Israel, killing Ayatollah Khamenei marks the climax of this campaign.
