Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has again advised people on Friday (July 31) how to disinfect their face mask. The formula is to clean your face mask with gasoline or petrol, and he insisted that he was “not joking”. It appears that Duterte, arguably the  was not happy that his advice, which was made last week, was not taken seriously.

Duterte, popularly known as “Dirty Harry”, was upset after critics said he was crazy. Health officials, shocked with his recommendation last week, had quickly issued a correction – cloths masks should be washed normally while surgical masks should be replaced after use. He had said that if cleaning agents were unavailable, petrol can do the tricks of disinfecting the masks.

Dr Jose Santiago, President of the Philippine Medical Association, explained – “You cannot use gasoline as disinfectant. Inhaling it may cause harm and could lead to more problems like respiratory disease.” Presidential spokesman Harry Roque quickly went into damage control, saying – “I can’t believe that after four years of him as president, you still don’t know him. It was just a joke.”

But President Duterte was not joking. So on Friday, he said again – “What I said is true. Just go to the gasoline station, and then have some drops, that’s disinfectant. I am not joking. That is true. You think I am just kidding.” As to critics who called him insane, the outspoken Philippines leader said – “Stupid! If I’m insane, you should be the president, not me.”

In February, after the Philippines became the first country to record a Covid-19 death outside China, Duterte downplayed the issue like U.S. President Trump, saying that the Coronavirus would eventually “go away and die a natural death.” Of course, the virus didn’t go away and by early March, the Philippines president was forced to lock down the country’s main island – Luzon.

Since March, it’s a mandatory to wear masks in the Philippines. The country has a staggering 93,354 confirmed Coronavirus infection and 2,023 deaths. On Friday, it reported biggest daily jump in new Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia for a second straight day. The country registered 4,063 new cases on Friday despite major cities have been under quarantine restrictions since June.

But during his regular briefing on Friday, Duterte promised his people that everything will be back to normal by December, and expects vaccine to emerge from China – “I promise you, by the grace of God, I hope by December we will be back to normal. Let’s just wait for a vaccine. Let’s wait till December, if we can just be patient. We are not going back to a ‘new normal’. It’s going to be normal again.”

Mr Duterte mentioned China’s Sinopharm and Sinovac Biotech as potential sources for vaccines, and told his people that the vaccines would be made available to the Philippines based on the good relations with China. Apparently, following an appeal from Duterte, China’s Foreign Ministry assured the Philippines would have priority access to China’s vaccines.

The Filipino president has a history of making bizarre, violent and offensive statements. In April, he ordered the police and military in the country to kill troublemakers who violate Coronavirus lockdown measures. He said – “My orders to the police and military … if there is trouble and there’s an occasion that they fight back and your lives are in danger, shoot them dead.

Back in June 2019, Duterte raised eyebrows, claiming that he was once gay, but “cured” himself after meeting his former wife (Elizabeth Zimmerman). Before he became president, Duterte was moderate on LGBT issues in the country. He even promised to legalize same-sex marriages during the presidential election, arguing that gay people were created by God.

In March 2018, the “Executioner” President Duterte warned the United Nations, threatening to throw the U.N. human rights team to the crocodiles to be fed – if they dared step on Filipino soil to investigate his controversial war on drugs. His threat was aimed specifically at UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

Mr. Zeid said he deplored the Philippines president’s instruction to the policemen to ignore inquiries into the alleged

A day after Mr. Zeid called for a   So these stupid (members of the U. will come here. Leave it to me. Do you have crocodiles here, the ones that really eat humans? Throw the sons of bitches to them.”

There’s a reason why President Donald Trump really likes President Duterte. The Philippines leader did not reserve his stinging remarks on foreign leaders dare to question his administration, including former President Barack Obama, whom he also called the “son of a bitch.” Duterte also did not think twice about  to get rid of terrorists.

In November 2017, due to his admiration for the “Dirty Harry” Duterte, President Trump deliberately added one day to his original schedule so that he can attend the 2017 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit in Manila, despite the Philippines leader’s awful track record on human rights and his pledge to “never visit the lousy U.

Ever since he named and shamed 5 police generals on July 5, 2016 for allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade, Mr. Duterte, also known as “The Punisher”, was not on the good book of the Obama administration. Obama was disgusted over Dirty Harry Duterte’s method of “shoot first and ask questions later” – killing 6,000 drug suspects in 6 months.

Unlike Obama, both Duterte and Trump clicked very well because both individuals share a common characteristic – shoot from the hip and say things they may not have really meant. While Mr. Obama scrapped a planned first meeting with the Philippine leader in September, 2016, Mr. Trump had invited President Duterte to visit the White House in 2017.

In fact, Trump administration had invited Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines leader to the White House (but left out scandal-plagued Malaysian PM Najib) in 2017. But Duterte never visited the White House. Offended with American politicians’ constant condemnation of his war on drugs, Duterte vowed he will never visit “lousy” America in his remaining time as president.

And who can forget his threat in 2016 to tear apart and eat Abu Sayyaf Islamic militants alive – “They will pay.  I will really carve your torso open.

Even Recalling Pope Francis’s visit to the Philippines in January 2015, Duterte told the people about his frustration of being stuck in Manila traffic in his speech – “It took us 5 hours to get from the hotel to the airport.
