Both leaders met in Turkey to tackle a series of sensitive issues. German Chancellor Angela Merkel lectured Turkish President Recep Erdogan about freedom of press. It was Merkel’s first visit to Turkey since a failed coup there last July, and comes as the country prepares to hold a critical referendum on boosting the powers of the presidency.

But it wasn’t Merkel’s urging to uphold democracy that upsets Mr. Erdogan, who is on his way to become an extremely powerful president if the people of Turkey agree to grant him more executive power. Instead, it was two words – Islamist Terrorism – that has gotten the Turkish president irritated during a joint press conference in Ankara.

Speaking alongside Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Angela Merkel said – “We spoke in detail about … the questions of the fight against Islamist terrorism, against every form of terrorism, also the terrorism of the PKK. We agree we want to cooperate, we are all affected by this. We agreed to have closer cooperation in the future,”

Stunned, Erdogan, sitting next to Merkel, retaliated – “This expression ‘Islamist terror’ seriously saddens us Muslims. Such an expression is not correct because Islam and terror cannot be associated. The meaning of Islam is peace. Please let’s not use it. As long as it is used we need to stand against it. As a Muslim president personally I cannot accept that.”

The phrase “Islamist terror” or “Islamic terror” is controversial because it links terror to the religion and not to crimes of individuals or organizations, such as the notorious Daesh (ISIS, ISIL, IS). Yet, “not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims” has become the buzzword since there’s little being done by the Muslim themselves to condemn such terrorism.

Even former U.S. president Barack Hussein Obama and defeated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton were too afraid to use the 3 magic wordsradical Islamic terrorist – let alone the more damaging “Islamist terror”. Perhaps copycat Merkel thought by using Islamic card, she could increase her chance of winning the coming election, the same way Donald Trump did.

However, Erdogan should be the last Muslim president to be offended with “Islamist terrorism”, considering his “family business” has benefited from illegal smuggling of oil from ISIS-held territory – proven from satellite images showing columns of tanker trucks loading with oil at an installation controlled by ISIS in Syria, before freely crossing the border into Turkey.

Besides son-in-law Berat Albayrak, Erdogan’s son – Bilal Erdogan – used his BMZ Group in the illicit business of trading oil with the terror group Daesh using oil tankers registered in Malta and even flew the Maltese flag. In fact, Erdogan had deliberately shot down the Russian Su-24 after Russia’s airstrikes damaged ISIS infrastructure and destroyed more than 500 trucks.

Of course, President Erdogan has to play to the gallery and makes political-correct statement. In front of local journalists, obviously he was forced to defend anything related to “Islam”. Yeni Safak, a conservative Turkish daily newspaper known for its hardline support of Erdogan, ran “President Erdogan’s warning to Merkel” on its website to the delight of his supporters.

Merkel has learned (or did she?) from her open-border policy that her kind humanitarian approach doesn’t necessary guarantee good returns. Her welcoming of 1.5-million Muslim refugees into Germany in 2015 was repaid with mass sexual assaults / rapes by 1,000 Muslim migrants/refugees in Cologne, Germany. She was forced to cover-up the crisis.

The Chancellor of German should be realistic that the type of separation of powers and freedom of press practiced in her country and other democratic Western countries would never happen in a Muslim country such as Turkey, not when the leader is fantastically hungry for power and wealth.
