Walt Disney Company is about to get its sixth Magical Disneyland this year. Scheduled to open on June 16, Shanghai Disneyland will rival Hong Kong and Tokyo Disneylands, the other two Disneyland in Asia. The tickets for the Shanghai theme park will go on sale to the public much sooner – from March 28 onwards.
As usual, Disneyland is not any pariah theme park but a luxury holiday destination that not all can afford. When the ticket counters open, one may be surprise to know that Shanghai Disneyland ticket prices are the most expensive in this region, pricier than rivals Hong Kong and Tokyo Disneyland.
Peak-day entry to the Shanghai theme park during public holidays, summer holidays and weekends will cost 499 Yuan (HK$590; US$76; £52; RM319) per day, and 370 Yuan (HK$438; US$56; £39; RM237) per day at other time. Ticket prices for children no taller than 1.4 metres, the elderly and disabled will enjoy 25% discount.
In comparison, adult general admission tickets for Hong Kong Disneyland cost HK$539 (US$69; £47; RM291) per day, with a children’s ticket costing HK$385 (US$49; £34; RM208); whereas a one-day adult ticket for Tokyo Disneyland costs 6,900 yen (HK$434; US$55; £38; RM234).
When Hong Kong Disneyland raised its prices by up to 9.4% starting November 2015, there were criticisms due to slowdown in Hong Kong tourism industry. Still, business was roaring even when the management raised the ticket prices by 10% the year earlier (2014). Hong Kong Disneyland made crazy profit of HK$332 million (US$42.6 million; £29.4 million; RM179.5 million) in 2014 alone.
The fact that Hong Kong Disneyland could charge 20% higher than Tokyo and still attracts tons of visitors, majority mainland Chinese, speaks volumes about the demand from China. In reality, it’s not worthwhile to pay such a high price for a visit to what appears to be the smallest theme park offered by Hong Kong Disneyland.
A ticket to Shanghai Disneyland entitles admission to all of the activities and attractions inside the theme park. Among the attractions are musical parades of Disney characters, activities including a “Frozen” Sing-Along Celebration, Star Wars characters in a launch bay and “Pirates of the Caribbean’s” Captain Jack Sparrow stunt spectacular, plus shops and restaurants.
Other features include various attractions and rides at the themed areas of Adventure Isle, Fantasyland, including an Alice in Wonderland Maze and a Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Gardens of Imagination, with a Marvel Universe, Tomorrowland, featuring a Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue ride, and Treasure Cove, with a Pirates of the Caribbean Battle for the Sunken Treasure.
According to Shanghai Disneyland, all tickets will be date-specific and valid only for the date purchased. The price of admission during the theme park’s grand opening period – from June 16 to 30 – when demand is expected to be high, will be 499 Yuan (HK$590; US$76; £52; RM319).
