Everyone knows that MCA (Malaysian Chinese Association) president Wee Ka Siong was among the first Barisan Nasional MPs who signed statutory declarations (SDs) backing Muhyiddin Yassin as Prime Minister during the chaotic political deadlock following the November 2022 national polls that produced a hung parliament. MCA is a component party of Barisan Nasional.
In that 15th General Election, Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 82 parliamentary seats, Perikatan Nasional (PN) grabbed 74 seats, while Barisan Nasional (BN) secured 30 seats. No coalition obtained a simple majority of 112 seats to form a government in the 222-seat Parliament. A royal proposal to form a “Unity Government” was mooted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King).
However, PN chairman Muhyiddin arrogantly rejected the unity government because he would have to play second fiddle to PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim. A secret deal between Anwar and BN chairman Zahid Hamidi saw Barisan Nasional ultimately shift its support to Pakatan Harapan. As a result, Anwar was installed as the 10th Prime Minister and those SDs were retracted.
Even before the 15th General Election in 2022, MCA under the leadership of Wee Ka Siong was a strong supporter of PN. A coalition formed in March 2020 to seize power in the infamous “Sheraton Move”, PN consisted of Malay nationalist Bersatu (Malaysian United Indigenous Party) and Islamic extremist PAS (Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party).
Even though Mr Wee insisted that his SD was signed to support the formation of a Perikatan Nasional government with Muhyiddin as Prime Minister, MCA was effectively a partner of PAS by virtue of BN’s role as one of governing partners in the backdoor government of Muhyiddin. The dominant backbone of BN – UMNO – along with Bersatu and PAS formed the Malay-centric government.
Of course, much has changed since then. Backdoor Prime Minister Muhyiddin only managed to enjoy power for 17 months, before the traitor was betrayed by his own ally – United Malays National Organization (UMNO) – and had to resign as Prime Minister on August 16, 2021. Today, PAS has taken over PN when Abdul Hadi Awang announced the termination of PAS cooperation with Bersatu on June 8, 2026.
When PAS president Hadi conveniently blamed the “split” on Bersatu’s misconduct, greedy seat allocations, and attempts to undermine PAS’s role in Muslim unity, he was actually setting the stage for a new cooperation with UMNO-led BN. The fake holy man had to kick out Bersatu because UMNO’s condition for a new cooperation is that PAS and Bersatu cannot sleep together and must divorce first.
Therefore, it’s not the first time MCA works with PAS when BN openly cooperates with PN in Negeri Sembilan after their first successful experiment in the just concluded Johor state election, where Hadi told PAS lemmings to transfer votes to BN. UMNO is now testing to see if the same replication works in Negeri Sembilan. Chances are this will not be the last time MCA rub shoulders with PAS extremists.
But when MCA Youth secretary-general Saw Yee Fung expressed dismay over what appears to be an electoral pact between BN and PN, Wee Ka Siong was forced to do damage control. Miss Saw said she repeatedly campaigned against PAS during the Johor state election, assuring voters that BN was not cooperating with the Islamist party.
With BN contesting only 25 of the 36 seats in the Negeri Sembilan state election, leaving the remaining 11 seats for PN, it’s crystal clear that Anwar Ibrahim is a 1-term Prime Minister as BN-PN is preparing to face PH in the next 16th General Election. PH is set to lose big in a direct contest. PN is offering something which PH cannot – premiership on the silver platter for BN.
Either Madam Saw was incredibly naïve or her drama deserves an Oscar. But it was enough to send a few eggs on her boss’s face. The understanding Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional have for the Negri Sembilan election is not a merger of the two coalitions, – Wee Ka Siong scrambled to explain. “I want to make this clear – we are not forming any political party or political alliance,” – he said during a press conference on Saturday (July 18).
He said the two coalitions (BN and PN) were cooperating strategically in selected seats to avoid multi-cornered contests that could split votes, ensuring a stable and capable state government. He also said MCA’s stand was to ensure the Chinese community, the plural society, vernacular education and religious freedom had representation and a voice in government.
Call it a merger, cooperation, alliance, partnership, collaboration, joint-venture, or whatever crap MCA president Wee wants. But BN and PN are working together, Zahid and Hadi are hugging each other, and UMNO, MCA, and MIC (component parties of BN) are cheering for PAS, Wawasan, Gerakan, and MIPP (members of PN) and vice-versa. Heck, even BN and PN uniforms are blue.
In case Wee suddenly suffers from selective amnesia, the Chinese community, the plural society, vernacular education, religious freedom, and freedom of expression had been under constant attacks, threats, and insults by MCA’s political master UMNO for more than 60 years before BN lost power in 2020. MCA being UMNO’s lapdog was already bad. And now MCA wants the Chinese to be subservient to PAS?
Comically and conveniently, to deflect responsibility, Wee argues that the final decision on the electoral understanding was reached at about 1am on July 15 while he was in London for his daughter’s wedding, with MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon and Negri Sembilan MCA chairman Leaw Kok Chan representing him in talks with the top Barisan leadership.
After MCA Youth secretary-general Saw Yee Fung’s outburst, MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon sent her a text – “Yes, you don’t need to come for the Negeri Sembilan state election. Thank you.” Interestingly, Saw said MCA’s central leadership had never held a meeting to discuss the BN-PN pact, contrary to Wee’s amusing story.
Did UMNO really consult all the component parties in BN before the decision to cooperate with PN, who had previously backstabbed and betrayed BN in favour of Bersatu not many moons ago? Or did MCA lie about a non-existent meeting to save face after being exposed because beggars can’t be choosers? After all, Wee Ka Siong won his Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat courtesy of UMNO.
Has UMNO even consulted its own grassroots in Negeri Sembilan before giving away 11 seats to PN? Based on the displeasure and complaints raised by disgruntled UMNO members in the state, it appears UMNO top leadership has ignored their own party members, what more MCA lapdogs. MCA is trapped between winning seats and keeping its Chinese supporters happy.
If indeed MCA did not agree with the BN-PN pact in the first place, the party which claims to represent the Chinese community could have expressed its rejection of radical Islamist PAS even if Wee was 10,600 km away in London. If clueless Chong could not make a wise decision, there’s something called WhatsApp. And there’s no reason to punish Saw by ordering her to stay at home if MCA leadership was not dirty.
What’s the difference between MCA and bitter enemy Democratic Action Party (DAP) when MCA has relentlessly criticised DAP for suppressing freedom of speech, only for Wee leadership to do exactly the same? As demonstrated by the spineless leadership of DAP Anthony Loke, how could Wee protect Chinese’s interests when even legitimate questions are being blocked or banned?
It’s not hard to understand why Wee is shutting down differing voices from within. MCA needs UMNO-Malays to deliver votes and PAS-Muslims to transfer votes for MCA candidates in Negeri Sembilan. At the same time, MCA wants ethnic Chinese – its core supporters – to believe that it is not betraying the Chinese community by working (silently) with PAS.
Yes, MCA wanted to have the cake and eat it too. Because MCA is weaker in Negeri Sembilan than Johor, Wee Ka Siong has to be very careful not to lose the already low Chinese support in his pocket. The top priority is to win as many seats as possible so that it could gain power in the state, as well as create a narrative that DAP is fast losing Chinese support to MCA.
Crucially, Wee hopes to return to Cabinet if the current BN-PN partnership in Johor, Negeri Sembilan and soon, Melaka state elections, continues into the federal elections in the next 16th General Election. When UMNO now considers PAS as friends, it’s hard for MCA to say otherwise when it has to depend heavily on Malay votes to win elections.
Perhaps Saw Yee Fung is still wet behind the ears. Get real, there’s no such thing as principle, dignity or moral values in Malaysian politics. It’s all about power, perks and projects. PH’s DAP and PKR were once considered the most respected political parties with the highest principles, dignity, integrity, honour, and whatnot. In less than three years, all those values have gone into the rubbish truck.
MCA should not be ashamed of BN-PN’s alliance of cooperation. Now is 2026, not 1996 where government-controlled news media shaped the political narratives. Today, Google and Artificial Intelligence could reveal the truth with a snap of a finger. Wee’s denial two weeks ago about MCA collaborating with PN in the Johor polls has turned out to be true in Negeri Sembilan.
