Iran fired 14 ballistic missiles at U.S. troops in Qatar on Monday (June 23), and in its typical hilarious face saving drama, has claimed to have “destroyed the American air base” in retaliation for U.S. strikes on three nuclear sites. With internet blackout still in place, Tehran did not need nuclear scientists to hoodwink tonnes of gullible Iranians that the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar had been been obliterated.
The number of missiles launched was designed to match the number of 30,000 pounds Massive Ordnance Penetrator or “MOP” that were dropped on Fordow (12) and Natanz (2). Better known as the bunker-buster bomb, the GPS-directed GBU-57 bomb, assembled by Boeing Co., was unleashed by a fleet of U.S. B-2 bombers which obliterated the Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday (June 21).
However, the U.S. base was already substantially evacuated and the missiles were easily intercepted with no casualties reported. The world knows why the Iranian’s powerful missiles failed to injure even a single American. President Trump announced on social media – “I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured,”

The price of oil fell and all flights resumed after Gulf states reopened their airspace. Even if Iran had wanted a war, it’s unthinkable that it would fire on Qatar, the friendliest state to Iran in the region, let alone at U.S. Central Command’s regional headquarters. But as a show of Iranian power, the attack failed miserably. To ensure everyone gets the message, Donald Trump mocked it as “a very weak response.”
Before its limited missile attack at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, Iranian officials called Qatar to deliver a warning that the American base would be hit. Qatar government then relayed the Iranian message to the U.S., giving Washington enough time to move its military assets and personnel to safety. American citizens were told to “shelter in place.”
Qatar then closed the country’s airspace to commercial flights as it awaited the Iranian missiles. It was then that Tehran fired at the American base. All were intercepted by air defenses, except one that fell harmlessly near the base. The interceptors collided with the missiles, leaving streaks in Doha’s summer night sky.

For all the predictions and analysis that a strike on Iran would “almost certainly result in thousands of American deaths” and triggers World War III, Iran strongly signaled it doesn’t want the fight. Israel has aggressively targeted Iran’s missile launchers, and Iranian salvos shrink each day. Iran is weak, and if the regime continues to shoot at the U.S. or Israel, it risks its own survival.
On the same Monday, Israel purposely blew the gate off the notorious Evin prison, where Iranian dissidents are held and tortured. Israel also struck Revolutionary Guard units focused on internal security and the headquarters of the Basij paramilitary, whose thugs Iran uses to put down protests. These are deliberate attacks on the regime’s institutions of repression.
If Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was relying on Trump against regime change to protect him from Israel or his own people, he should think again. “It’s not politically correct to use the term, ‘Regime Change,’” – President Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday as he flip-flopped, “but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!”

Mr Trump does not want another Iraq war. He wants “Peace and Harmony,” so he wrote on Monday that there won’t be a ground invasion or occupation. If Iran stands down, he would “encourage Israel to do the same.” The Commander-in-Chief wanted to capitalize on his latest win. If both Tehran and Tel Aviv stop killing each other, he can claim another trophy– perhaps the Nobel Peace Prize.
And sure enough, after giving Tehran the chance to save face with the attack at U.S. base in Qatar, Trump hastily announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a “Complete and Total CEASEFIRE” within 24 hours and an end to what he called “The 12 Day War.” The White House conclusion – Iran has surrendered, and even in 12 short days the war’s achievements are huge for Israel and the U.S.
After some resistance and confusion, Israel reportedly agreed if Iran ceases its attacks, and Iran said the same. Tehran, isolated and demoralized, appears to have lost everything – including its nuclear enrichment and weaponization facilities, its leading military commanders and nuclear scientists, and much of its missile production and launch capacity.

Israel may prefer more time to hit more targets, but it also has to worry about protecting its cities and citizens, so it appears like a win-win solution. PM Benjamin Netanyahu has made clear that Israel won’t return to a status quo whereby Iran or its proxy militias endanger its existence. The landscape has changed. Israel is prepared to strike again if Tehran insists on rebuilding its missile and nuclear capabilities.
The burning question is whether the ceasefire bulldozed and forced by Trump on Israel and Iran will hold. Tel Aviv had accused Iran of launching missiles into its airspace after the truce was supposed to take effect. Meanwhile, Tehran had denied firing on Israel, even as its ballistic missiles were flying into Israeli’s airspace, and accused Israel of continue attacking its military assets.
Frustrated, Donald Trump warned both sides not to violate the ceasefire. He was surprised to learn on Tuesday morning that the war hadn’t ended as he had anticipated. He wasn’t happy with the two nations “that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the fucking they’re doing.” He knew Israel was dropping more bombs than Iran could fire its missiles.

After boarding a helicopter for a short flight to his presidential plane, Trump fired a warning to Israel – “DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!” Thirty-eight minutes later, after a call with Netanyahu, Trump announced the Israeli warplanes were turning around. “Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect!”.
Claiming victory, Netanyahu said Israel destroyed a radar installation near Tehran and Israel had “achieved all of its objectives for the war.” Likewise, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council proclaimed that it had delivered a “crushing response to every act of hostility by the enemy” and “shattered the enemy’s primary strategic goal.” Peace, at least temporarily, should return to the Middle East.
Licking its wound, Ali Khamenei needed time to assess Iran’s damage and to plan what to do next. He could fall prey to a popular uprising. Or he could fall to an elite coup, from elements of the regime or military that see the Ayatollah’s policies driving them into the ground. The country’s nuclear program and ballistic missiles had been crippled and top commanders and scientists have been killed.

In the same breath, Israel also needed time to rebuild some infrastructure destroyed by Iranian’s ballistic missiles. Clearly it had won. Crucially, it had to give face to Trump so even though its air force could continue to bomb Iranians, it has to comply with the ceasefire. It also needed some breather to assess the real impact of the bunker busters on Iran’s nuclear sites.
As for Mr. Trump, the cease-fire and “12 day war” line is a way of assuring that the U.S. is not dragged into a prolonged war in the region. He does not want oil prices to go ballistic, which is bad for inflation and the economy. That’s why he publicly said China can continue to buy Iranian oil. But he has a bigger issue – the intelligence reports that the strike on Iranian’s 3 nuclear sites was not as successful as he has trumpeted.
