As people welcomed the 2025 New Year, a pair of terrorist attacks in the U.S. tourist hubs has shocked the country. In New Orleans, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old Texas man who served in the U.S. Army for 13 years including a deployment to Afghanistan, rammed a rented Ford pickup into revelers around 3:15 a.m. on Bourbon Street that killed 15 people and injured 35.
He died in a shootout with police, whilst two officers were shot but were stable. However, federal officials and local law enforcement said that Shamsud did not act alone and that they are looking for accomplices. The FBI said the U.S. veteran had an Islamic State (ISIS) flag as well as weapons and a potential improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, in his Ford F-150 Lightning truck.
Court records show Shamsud-Din Jabbar was divorced in 2022, separating from his wife of five years. Civil records show he was married twice, with his first marriage ending in 2012 and his second in 2022. In 2020, Jabber’s second wife filed a motion for a temporary restraining order. A month later, the divorce case was dismissed, and a new divorce petition was filed in 2021.

Texas criminal records show that he was charged in 2002 with misdemeanor theft and in 2005 with driving with an invalid license. He served as a human resource specialist and information technology specialist from 2007 until 2015, before joining the Army Reserve as an IT specialist until 2020, holding the rank of staff sergeant at the end of the service. He had been working for professional services giant Deloitte in a staff-level role since 2021.
Hours later in Las Vegas, a deadly explosion of a Tesla CyberTruck outside the Trump International Hotel sent fears and panic over the possibility of a chain of terrorist attacks linked to military. This round, the Cybertruck was rented in Colorado and arrived in the city on Wednesday morning, less than two hours before the detonation that killed the driver and injured 7 other people.
The Tesla Cybertruck was rented to Matthew Alan Livelsberger, an active duty US Army service member. Livelsberger had been serving in Germany but was on leave in Colorado at the time of the incident. Footage showed the truck parked directly in front of the entrance of the hotel. The vehicle sits idle for 20 seconds before exploding – bursts of multi-coloured fireworks shooting in multiple directions.

Besides investigating the connection between the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks, the authorities are also scrambling to connect the dots whether it might be linked to President-Elect Donald Trump, who owns the hotel, or Elon Musk, who owns Tesla. Billionaire and Tesla CEO Musk supported Trump’s 2024 Presidential Election and has been Trump’s closest adviser.
Trump recently named Musk to co-lead a presidential advisory commission, the Department of Government Efficiency. But the billionaire said – “We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion.”
Hours before the rampage in New Orleans, Jabbar had posted videos on social media indicating he was inspired by ISIS and “expressing his desire to kill“, while very little information is known about the dead driver of the Cybertruck. The only connection so far is that both the Cybertruck and the vehicle used in the New Orleans attack had been rented through car-sharing service Turo.

Another connection was that Matthew Alan Livelsberger previously served at the same military base as Shamsud-Din Jabbar. Based on the ongoing political divisions in the U.S., including the immigration issue and the conflict in the Middle East, both U.S.-born military men could have been radicalized to carry out their respectively attack.
Surveillance video shows a driver passing by the Trump Hotel in Vegas about an hour before the car explodes, and then circling back near the end of that hour and stopping in front of the hotel, where the car explodes several seconds later. Musk said the “whole Tesla senior team is investigating this matter right now”, while an official said the explosion was not a “lithium battery” blast.
Tesla introduced its steel-clad, futuristic-looking Cybertruck in 2023, with Musk trumpeting the vehicle’s bullet-proof windows. The electric vehicle (EV) costs between US$80,000 and US$100,000. Built for any adventure, Tesla claims Cybertruck has a durable exterior, spacious interior and technological capabilities so you can pack up your gear and hit the road.

Nevertheless, extra police officers have been mobilized to Trump Tower as a precaution and the security perimeter was expanded to keep the public and traffic further away from the building. Meanwhile, Trump International Hotel was evacuated, and guests have been moved to Resorts World Las Vegas. Donald Trump narrowly survived two assassination attempts in 2024.
