Besides school holidays and Christmas celebration, there are year-end bonus, annual increment, Chinese New Year and whatnot. So year end, or rather the month of December is particularly exciting for everyone. However, before the internet age, there was something that people rushed to get for themselves before it ran out of stock. This item is the New Year calendar but with the smartphone age nowadays, not many seem to care about getting paper-made calendar except aunties and uncles. Regardless whether it’s paper-made or digital calendar, people still needs one especially the Sexy Girls Calendar.
So, European low-cost carrier, Ryanair (Nasdaq: RYAAY, stock) did just that – promoting the Ryanair New Year 2012 calendar which features its airhostesses in sexy and hot bikinis. It was a noble thing to do considering that Ryanair actually planned to to sell all 10,000 copies of the calendar ahead of Christmas and the targeting sales of €100,000 will then be forwarded to the charity Debra Ireland.
However, the 2012 Ryanair Cabin Crew Charity Calendar featuring 13 female cabin crew members wearing sexy bikinis is inviting criticisms and complaints for using female body in advertising. A woman by the name of “Ghanda” who claims to be a flight attendant herself launched a campaign against Ryanair simply because the advertising is demeaning and sexist. So far, the campaign has attracted more than 8,000 supporters.
In fact, this is not the first time Irish budget airline Ryanair attracts such controversy. The airline came under fire earlier this year for its proposal to start offering pornographic entertainment in-flight on personalized tablets. Although Ryanair tries to justify that the company has been publishing its Cabin Crew charity calendar every year since 2008, not to mention it was for good causes, critics said the airline is actually profiting by using the publicity whipped up by the calendar to sell its low-cost flights.
Hmm, maybe low-cost carrier AirAsia Berhad’s (KLSE: AIRASIA, stock-code 5099) and financially ailing carrier Malaysia Airline System (KLSE: MAS, stock-code 3786) can try such tricks. Besides making cabin crew look like “glamour models”, MAS could also profit from such advertising to at least heal some of its financial problems. If a politician can becomes a political party president after his sex video scandal, sexy cabin crews doing charity works should not attract much complaints, literally speaking.
