Upset of being called an “untrustworthy partner” by Lim Guan Eng, UMNO vice-president Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail went berserk, warning the DAP national adviser against worsening tensions at a time when Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are working to fix the Negeri Sembilan crisis. Rosdy said Lim’s remarks were unhelpful and could destabilise the political landscape.

Heck, Rosdy even has the cheek to threaten Lim against acting as an instigator who could trigger larger internal conflicts, when it was UMNO (United Malays National Organization) that had triggered the crisis in the first place when 14 UMNO Negeri Sembilan assemblymen suddenly withdrew support for Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) Aminuddin Harun.

The UMNO vice-president even lectured that leaders must prioritize professionalism over personal grievances for the sake of political stability and the welfare of the people. “The people want stability and solutions, not prolonged political disputes,” – he said. Mr Rosdy was barking up the wrong tree. He should have lectured his comrade, UMNO Negeri Sembilan chief Jalaluddin Alias.

UMNO - Untrustworthy Partner

When Jalaluddin led the 14 UMNO assemblymen to overthrow Aminuddin, the power-hungry UMNO warlord was prioritizing self-interest over professionalism without any concern for the welfare of the people. In fact, even after UMNO had failed to destabilize the Aminuddin administration through betrayal, Jalaluddin is still trying to prolong the political disputes.

If UMNO-led Barisan Nasional coalition finds it insulting to be labeled “untrustworthy or unreliable”, then it should not have backstabbed and betrayed its partner, Pakatan Harapan, in the first place. It was only after it had failed to form a backdoor government with opposition Perikatan Nasional that UMNO top leadership made a U-turn and expressed its commitment to Negeri Sembilan’s unity government.

Even within UMNO, they can’t make up their mind whether – with tail between legs – to go back to supporting Chief Minister Aminuddin or become the opposition. While Jalaluddin repeatedly said Negeri Sembilan UMNO is prepared to serve as the opposition, UMNO president Zahid Hamidi insists UMNO has no intention of becoming an opposition party.

UMNO - President Zahid Hamidi and Deputy President Mohamad Hasan

In fact, one of the 14 UMNO assemblymen who tried – and failed – to topple the state government was none other than UMNO deputy president Mohamad Hasan, who is the assemblyman for Rantau in Negeri Sembilan. Despite denials, Mohamad Hasan, better known as Tok Mat, was the mastermind behind the crisis.

That explains why UMNO top leadership, instead of punishing the 14 rogue assemblymen, has instead expressed its respect for the decision to withdraw support for Aminuddin. And because Mohamad Hasan happens to be Minister of Foreign Affairs, the spineless Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has chosen to keep both eyes closed, even after his own party vice-president had been backstabbed.

Tok Mat, formerly Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar from 2004 to 2018, was the “chief instigator” who sparked the coup in the state. And his silence is the clearest proof that he knew from the beginning about the plot to seize power. It’s not an exaggeration to suggest that both UMNO president Zahid Hamidi and deputy president Mohamad Hasan had given their green light for the treachery.

DAP Chairman Lim Guan Eng

Therefore, former finance minister Lim Guan Eng was absolutely correct to describe UMNO and Barisan Nasional as untrustworthy and urged voters to reject them in the next general election. He was also not wrong for saying the withdrawal of support for Aminuddin is the clearest evidence of Barisan Nasional’s willingness to set aside national interests for political gain.

Lim’s brutal honesty was meant to knock some sense into his own party’s chief – Democratic Action Party or DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook – who is still drunk with power. Zahid already confirmed on May 2 that Barisan Nasional is “almost certain” to go solo in the 16th General Election. Yet, both Premier Anwar and Transport Minister Loke are still so terrified of UMNO.

After the damage is done, the coward top leadership of Pakatan Harapan desperately tried to do damage control. They arranged a mega “ceramah” in Paroi, Negeri Sembilan. The campaign speech, which attracted hundreds of supporters, was suddenly launched for two reasons – to test the waters about supporters’ reactions and to pre-emptively rally voters in the event of a state election.

Anwar Ibrahim Hugging Anthony Loke Siew Fook

Among those who spoke at the ceramah were Aminuddin, Pakatan secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP chief Anthony Loke. Interestingly, PM Anwar chickened out and did not attend the event, although his image featured prominently on the stage backdrop, posters, and official programme.

But angry Pakatan Harapan supporters chanted “Tolak UMNO” (reject UMNO) after several coalition leaders concluded their speeches, despite repeated calls for calm. Trying to calm the audience, Loke Siew Fook said actions should not be driven by emotions, but by a clear understanding of the realities surrounding the Negeri Sembilan crisis.

Clearly, Pakatan Harapan grassroots who criticized UMNO’s betrayal disagreed with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke’s cowardice and lack of leadership. The power-hungry top leaders’ reluctance to rock the boat has failed to ease the tensions in Negeri Sembilan, which happens to be the home base of Loke.

Pakatan Harapan Ceramah - Paroi Negeri Sembilan

In the same breath, the anger demonstrated by Pakatan Harapan supporters in Negeri Sembilan lends credence to Lim Guan Eng’s call for DAP, and allies such as PKR and Amanah for that matter, to go solo rather than foolishly and cowardly clinging to an “untrustworthy partner”like UMNO. Even if Anwar disagrees due to his agenda, Loke should grow a spine.

When UMNO notorious Youth Chief Akmal Saleh boldly challenged Pakatan Harapan to sack all UMNO leaders from the Unity Government in retaliation to DAPSY (DAP youth) leaders’ call for want Tok Mat (Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan) to be sacked, the entire leadership of DAP was as silent as church mice. DAP under Loke did not even have the balls to counterattack Akmal.

DAP could easily challenge Akmal to pressure his party UMNO to quit the government, failing which he would resign as UMNO Youth Chief in protest. Trembling in fear, the toothless Democratic Action Party “kowtow” to not only a gangster, but also to a bunch of racist and corrupt thieves who had been stealing people’s money for over 60 years since independence in 1957.

Anwar Ibrahim with Zahid Hamidi - Laugh

Like it or not, UMNO cannot be trusted due to its long history of racism, extremism, and corruption. The political cooperation in Negeri Sembilan has already been destabilized since the moment UMNO betrayed Pakatan Harapan. The reliability and trustworthiness of UMNO could not withstand the test of time when they made the move to challenge Anwar’s power base in Negeri Sembilan.
