You may give us a big yawn if we were to tell you that Pepsi is launching a new product. After all, you’ve been Coca Cola’s biggest fan after Warren Buffett. But PepsiCo Inc. is not launching another carbonated drink. Pepsi is releasing a smartphone. Yes, it’s so unbelievable because it’s like saying President Obama is going to work as a janitor.
The Pepsi smartphone – named Pepsi P1 – comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 1.7GHZ MT6592 MediaTek processor, 2GB of RAM paired with 16GB internal storage, plus a 13-megapixel rear and a 5-megapixel front camera. The Android phone will the flushed with 3,000 mAh battery juice. Running on Android 5.1 Lollipop OS, the Pepsi P1 Android will be priced at US$205 a pop.
So, has Pepsi gone bonkers by venturing into mobile phone manufacturing business? Not really. PepsiCo Inc said on Monday it is working with a licensing partner to market a line of mobile phones and accessories in China in the next few months. However, the spokeswoman did not name the licensing partner or give any further details about the phone.
“Available in China only, this effort is similar to recent globally licensed Pepsi products which include apparel and accessories,” the spokeswoman confirmed the rumours with Reuters. In the past Pepsi has teamed up with Bang & Olufsen, a Danish luxury stereo and TV maker, and Del Toro, an Italian shoemaker. So, this is not the first time Pepsi has done such crazy stuff.
A Weibo page claims the Pepsi smartphone will make its grand entrance into the already crowded Android market next Tuesday, Oct 20th. Based on the leaked renderings, PepsiCo could be partnering with Huawei with the soft drink maker’s signature red-white-blue embossed logo beneath the phone’s camera.
Although we’ve seen Caterpillar’s phone and Mont Blanc’s watch, a Pepsi and smartphone pairing is rather weird, though refreshing. From what we can see so far, this is nothing more than a one-time marketing strategy to promote its brand. It’s just like rebadging a BMW with Pepsi logo and call it a Pepsi ultimate performance car (*grin*).
But who knows, people might get crazy about their unique Pepsi phone that the soft drink manufacturer may release more models and subsequently follows the path of Google Nexus phone. Perhaps they could sell smartphone better than selling soft drink. Coming soon – new laptop from Kellogg’s and smart TV from Cadbury.
