After DAP’s crushing defeat in last November’s Sabah state election, the party’s top leadership scrambled for an emergency meeting behind closed doors. Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary-general Anthony Loke was forced to announce that the partywill review its position in the government if Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim fails to deliver meaningful reforms within six months.
But Loke Siew Fook was quick to clarify that DAP won’t let the Anwar government collapse – suggesting that DAP will continue to support Anwar even if DAP quits the government. In other words, even if Anwar continues to allow racist bigots and religious extremists to attack the interests of minority Chinese and Indians, DAP under spineless Loke will still blindly support Anwar Madanistan.
Exactly what it meant with meaningful reforms is beyond comprehension because Loke deliberately made it vague and ambiguous. The tactic is simple – to allow DAP rooms to spin and twist in the event Anwar fails to deliver the so-called meaningful reforms. Anwar and Loke could self-declare that reforms have been delivered even if nothing has been done.

On Thursday (February 5), when grilled, Anthony Loke said he would provide an answer in July on DAP’s decision regarding his self-imposed 6-month notice, which he announced back on December 9, 2025. This means it’s a 7-month notice, not six months. It would become eight months if DAP’s decision stretched till the end of July 2026. So, why is Loke dragging his feet?
Both Anwar and Loke knew that if they can’t even deliver anything meaningful in more than 36 months, chances are they can’t deliver anything in 6 months. The 6-month notice was just an empty rhetoric or smokescreen to calm and pacify – even to scam – angry supporters to create a false hope that Anwar-led Pakatan Harapan would deliver reforms. It’s also a tactic to buy time till the Melaka state election.
Don’t be surprised if Loke postpones DAP’s decision a few more months beyond July as the Barisan Nasional-led state assembly’s five-year term ends only in December this year. Crucially, while the 16th General Election is only due by February 2028, there is increasing speculation that some parties – including DAP – may push for a coordinated national polls to run concurrently with the Melaka state contest.

Interestingly, while DAP strongly prefers concurrent federal and state polls under the pretext of cost savings and campaign streamlining, Anwar’s People’s Justice Party or PKR has a different thought. The Premier, whose approval rating had plunged from 55% (May 2025) to 33% before climbing to 46%, wants to stretch the term to its full length and delay the 16th national polls until 2028 to allow its policies time to work and build public support.
If Anwar is a one-term prime minister, the fake reformist wanted to cling to power till the last minute. PKR’s disastrous result in the Sabah election was not just a wakeup call, but a dreadful warning to the narcissist PKR president drunk with power. There were truckloads of problems with his leadership and policies that he simply does not have confidence to call for a snap election this year.
Yes, the results of the Melaka election, if it were to run separately, will determine whether DAP should quit or stay in the Anwar government. The massive swing in Chinese votes in Sabah away from the Pakatan Harapan coalition, which they had backed solidly for more than a decade, saw DAP annihilated. It was DAP’s worst performance in history, and it happened under the leadership of Anthony Loke.

And Melaka election would provide the answer to the burning question – is the sentiment among Chinese voters in Sabah a reflection of states in the Peninsular? DAP lost all eight of the seats it contested in Sabah – including six seats it won in 2020, five of which it secured with supermajorities of more than 50%. In fact, its average vote share plunged from 78% to just 27%.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), under Anwar’s arrogance leadership, won only one of the dozen seats it contested, compared to two wins in the 2020 state election. And this sole victory came from a candidate who had parachuted from Sabah-based Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). Hence, like DAP, PKR had actually been wiped out in Sabah if not for the cheating.
Get real – Anwar’s problems cannot be fixed within 6 months. These include bad policies – from economic mishandling to education discrimination – which have worsened since DAP came to power. This is why it’s impossible to restore Chinese support for DAP to pre-2022 level. The damage is done, thanks to DAP’s silence and Anwar’s complicity with UMNO in oppressing the community for the past 3 years.

Tax regimes like the expansion of SST (sales and services tax), the troublesome e-invoicing system, and the deliberate tax refund delays are just some unpopular economic policies affecting SME (small and medium enterprise), especially Chinese business owners. Worse, the LHDN or the taxmen was ordered by Anwar to aggressively collect taxes, leading to abuse of power such as denial of rightful tax exemptions.
DAP was slaughtered in Sabah due to the party’s silence when the Chinese community was being bullied, intimidated and threatened by both opposition Perikatan Nasional as well as ally UMNO. PKR, meanwhile, was butchered for ignoring the multi-ethnic core that had been backing Pakatan Harapan up to the Sabah polls, focusing instead on competing for Malay voters.
In 2021, when UMNO’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob was prime minister, Barisan Nasional relied on its core base to secure a two-thirds majority in the Melaka state assembly, winning 21 of 28 seats with a turnout of just 65.85%. In that same election, Pakatan Harapan won only 5 seats, down from 11 seats, with DAP winning 4 seats (down from 7) and Amanah capturing 1 seat (down from 2) whilst PKR zero seat (down from 2).

Mr Loke hopes to win the easy contest by maintaining its 4 seats, and declares that DAP does not need to quit Madani as the Chinese voters are “happy” with reforms delivered by PM Anwar. DAP can either spin that its core Chinese votes have returned or twist that the Sabah Chinese tsunami was only confined to the Borneo state. But DAP would be in trouble if it fails to retain its 4 seats.
With up to 95% of Chinese votes going to DAP in the November 2022 General Election, a drop of Chinese Sabahan votes from 78% to 27% was unthinkable. That’s why DAP insists on having state and federal polls run concurrently. If DAP performs poorly in Melaka, then Loke has to make the hard decision to quit the government. But he needs to do nothing if Melaka and the 16th national polls run together.
However, there’s a problem even if DAP is contended with contesting just 4 seats. Drunk with power and afraid to offend the racist United Malays National Organization (UMNO), Loke has repeatedly insisted on the principle of incumbency for seat allocations between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional. But Anthony Loke’s cowardice in playing safe does not resonate with DAP grassroots’ wish.

Why should DAP contest only 4 seats if it could potentially double the wins. If not for the irresponsible power-hungry UMNO risking people’s lives of having the 2021 Melaka state election in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, spooking the Chinese community from voting, DAP may have easily won more than 4 seats. How does Loke plan to convince the Chinese to vote for UMNO now after the Malay nationalist party had cheated?
Besides, what makes the genius Loke, and Anwar for that matter, think UMNO will not jump ship to join racist bigot Bersatu and religious extremist PAS after the 16th General Election to form yet another Malay-centric government? Are Melaka Chinese so stupid to vote for UMNO, only for the party to bully, oppress and terrorize the Chinese community thereafter – either under notorious Akmal or Perikatan Nasional banner?
More importantly, if state and national polls are held separately just to satisfy Anwar’s obsession for power, the same problems could repeat after Melaka’s state election. Sarawak’s state election is due in April 2027 and Johor’s in June 2027. DAP and PKR are expected to be butchered in Sarawak, whilst power-crazy Johor UMNO is guaranteed not to share seats or power with Pakatan Harapan.

If 16th General Election is brought forward to match Melaka’s timeline, an election could be held in November 2026 after the federal budget is tabled but before the monsoon intensifies. Staging it in the first quarter of 2027 is seen as unlikely, given that Ramadan and Hari Raya fall during that period. Pakatan Harapan could also take advantage of the current turmoil in the Opposition to win over fence sitters.
Regardless of whether state and national elections will be held separately or concurrently, DAP and PKR hope to convince (or rather hoodwink) supporters that reforms have been done since the Sabah election. The Madanistan would brag that prime ministerial term limit would be no more than 10 years or two full terms – even though it was just a proposal at the Cabinet level and the details are sketchy.
They knew the Bill had to first be tabled in the Parliament for its first reading. The second and third readings – required for it to become law – could be deferred indefinitely as part of delaying tactic. Before the Bill could even be debated, the national polls would have happened. Penang is the first and only state to impose a two-term limit on its chief minister in November 2018.

Another cosmetic reform which Loke would boast is fighting the diseases of corruption and cronyism. While PM Anwar has proudly claimed that RM15.5 billion in lost revenue from leakages, smuggling and corruption cases had been recovered, the fact remains that not a single big shark has been sent to prison. On the contrary, people saw how Anwar tries to free the world’s biggest crook – ex-PM Najib Razak.
Worse, Anwar’s political secretary, Shamsul Iskandar, and crony, Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak have been caught in corruption and dubious business deals. And you can bet your last dollar that other measures such as separating the offices of the Attorney-General and the Public Prosecutor, the Ombudsman Bill, and the Freedom of Information Bill, would similarly go through the snail pace of fake reforms.
Anthony Loke would certainly crow about the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), even though UMNO leaders have been firm in rejecting UEC recognition. PM Anwar only vaguely said the pathway to higher education is open for UEC graduates if the Malay language and history are taught in the Chinese independent schools. Whether the UEC students can actually gain entry into public universities is another separate issue.

Despite pro-Anwar bloggers, propagandists, cyber troopers, YouTubers, and TikTokers prematurely celebrating UEC recognition, higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir from UMNO said that all aspects of the UEC will be thoroughly reviewed to ensure it aligns with public interest and national education goals. Therefore, believe the recognition only when you see UEC students officially accepted into public universities.
Heck, DAP outspoken lawmaker Nga Kor Ming could even repeat his hilarious prediction that with the Malaysian Ringgit strengthening to 3.9 to a dollar under Anwar leadership, Singaporeans would soon migrate to Malaysia for work, even though the appreciation of the Ringgit was largely due to President Donald Trump’s deliberate plan to weaken the dollar to help domestic manufacturers.
Incremental improvements to outstanding tax refunds and e-invoicing, one-off cash handout of RM100, and a pathetic extra RM30 million for the facility upgrade fund for Chinese-language vernacular primary schools were just an afterthought or damage control to appease the Chinese voters after the disastrous Sabah state election. You can’t fool all the people all the time.
