After successfully sabotaging fellow Kamala Harris’ chance to become the first female, first black, and first Asian-American president (she is of Indian-Jamaican heritage) by calling 74 million American voters who supported Trump “garbage”, outgoing Biden has now begun sabotaging the new 47th POTUS with an authorization for Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia.

With two months before President Joe Biden hands over power to Donald Trump, it’s obvious why Washington made a major policy reversal. Previously refused to allow such strikes with US-made ATACMS missiles because of fear it would escalate the current Russia-Ukraine War to the rest of Europe, Biden has suddenly given the green light for Zelensky to use American long range missiles.

While Ukraine has been using the Lockheed Martin’s Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) against Russian troops within its occupied Ukraine territory, the U.S. has never allowed Kyiv to use the ATACMS inside Russia – until now. ATACMS is a surface-to-surface ballistic missile capable of hitting targets at up to 300km (186 miles), and each missile costs around US$1.5 million.

ATACMS - Lockheed Martin Army Tactical Missile System

First used in the Gulf War in 1991, ATACMS follow a ballistic path into the atmosphere before coming back down at a high speed, making them difficult to intercept. It can carry two different types of warhead. First type – cluster warheads fitted with hundreds of bomblets designed to destroy lighter-armoured units over a wide area. Second type – a 225kg high explosive designed to destroy hardened facilities and larger structures.

On paper, the Biden administration can argue that the recent arrival of 11,000 North Korean troops to support Moscow in the Kursk region beginning last month (October), where Ukraine has occupied territory since August, provides the justification for Ukraine to use ATACMS. The White House could argue that  the decision was to deter Kim Jong-un from sending more troops to Russia to fight Ukraine.

But Russian leader Vladimir Putin warned last month that if Western nations decided to authorize Ukraine to strike Russian territory with long-range weapons, it would represent “direct participation” of NATO countries in the war. Earlier in June, Putin threatened to also provide longer-range weapons to others such as North Korea to strike Western targets or allies if NATO allows Ukraine to attack Russian territory.

In truth, however, Biden is desperate to do all he can in the little time he has left in office to ensure Trump could not easily withdraw support for Ukraine. Trump, who will take office on January 2025, has vowed to end the war within 24 hours. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that the Russia-Ukraine war will end “faster” when Donald Trump takes over as US president.

The war has been ongoing for more than two and a half years, following Putin’s “special military operation” to de-Nazify against Ukraine “neo-Nazis”. And despite Western media’s propaganda that Putin was losing the war, Russia is making gains at key spots along the frontlines of eastern and southeastern Ukraine, moving closer to key hubs like the city of Kurakhove.

Now, with the return of Trump to the Oval Office, Zelensky admitted the situation in Ukraine’s east was “indeed difficult”, where Russia has been pressing its advantages in manpower and weaponry. Zelensky had previously refused to engage in peace talks with Putin, vowing to fight for every inch of Ukrainian territory and demand for the return of areas occupied by Russia since the invasion.

Ukraine Zelensky

In fact, following Putin’s annexation of four additional Ukrainian regions in the east and in the south, Zelensky issued a decree declaring it “impossible” to negotiate with the Russian leader. When there were suggestions that Ukraine yield areas of their country as part of a peace deal, including billionaire Elon Musk’s proposal to allow Russia keeps Crimea, Ukraine was mad and furious.

Musk, who owns SpaceX and has helped supply Ukraine’s military with Starlink satellite communication devices, had also mocked Zelensky’s plea for assistance from the West against Putin’s forces. After the U.S. Presidential Election, Zelensky had called Mr. Trump to congratulate him, only for Trump to hand Musk the phone, where Zelensky thanked him for the communication assistance.

The participation of Musk during the 25-minute private phone call demonstrates his influence and suggests more pressure to Zelensky to end the war. Therefore, the Ukrainian leader is now making a U-turn. With the president-elect and his running mate, JD Vance, as well as Elon Musk casting strong doubts about the continued U.S. commitment to Kyiv, it’s hard to see how Zelensky could continue with the war.

During a presidential debate, Mr. Trump has suggested that Mr. Zelensky has gotten too much military and financial aid from the Biden administration. Between the start of the war and the end of June 2024, the U.S. delivered or committed to send weapons and equipment worth U$55.5 billion. Even domestically among Americans, support for arming Ukraine appears to have waned.

Despite Biden’s latest approval for Zelensky to play with the ATACMS toy in Russia, the Ukranian president said that Ukraine “must do everything so that this war ends next year, ends through diplomatic means” – a reversal from his previous stubbornness not to talk with Putin. Now Zelensky has stopped talking about his refusal to cede any Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which Russia has occupied since 2014.

Like it or not, the signs are clear that Trump will force Ukraine and Russia to engage in serious diplomatic negotiations to agree on a ceasefire, and possibly a settlement deal. Not only Zelensky will not get any more money and military hardware, not to mention losing currently Russian-occupied territories, Ukraine would also have to give up its fantasy for NATO membership.

Russia vs NATO - Flag

While Biden’s evil plan to sabotage Trump could involve granting Ukraine leverage in any peace talks that may lie ahead, it does not mean Putin will obediently do what Trump asks him to do. Sure, the Russian supremo might talk with Zelensky, but there is some doubt that Vladimir Putin is keen to reach a settlement quickly. He will most likely drag the talks; introduce additional demands and conditions to extract maximum concessions.

After all, the U.S. and Ukraine need to end the war more than the Kremlin wants to end the war. Most likely Trump will push Zelensky into accepting a bad deal because without a settlement, Ukraine would use ATACMS to strike deep inside Russia, spooking the stock market and pushing up the oil prices, even starting a World War 3 – all of which are not in the Trump’s policies.

More importantly, Trump cannot allow Biden’s plan to destabilize his administration to succeed with the latest green light allowing Ukraine to weaponise ATACMS to attack Russia. Trump had accused Biden of bringing the world to the brink of nuclear war by making “stupid threats” against Russia. Besides, Trump must make Putin his friend again in order to break up the relationship between Russia and China.
