North Korea slammed what it called the US’ “gangster-like mindset” during the denuclearization talks last week. The hermit kingdom has claimed that the “attitude” of the U.S. was regrettable and not in the spirit of the June 12 summit in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
The accusation came after Mike Pompeo visited Pyongyang and declared that the talks were productive. The U.S. Secretary of State, of course, has rubbished the Trump administration was using “gangster-like diplomacy” tactics. “If those requests were gangster-like, the world is a gangster” – Mr. Pompeo retaliated. So, was the trip successful or not?
North Korean officials accused the U.S. of unreasonable demands on CVID – the “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation” of the hermit state – something which Mr. Kim was not willing or have no intention to do. As Pompeo departed Pyongyang, the America’s top diplomat claimed that he held “many hours of productive conversations”. Really?
Washington wanted Pyongyang to fully declare all of its weapons of mass destruction – nuclear, chemical, and biological, as well as intercontinental ballistic missiles – and then discuss how and when to dismantle them. President Trump probably thought he was ordering a cup of coffee and the waiter Kim Jong-un would come rushing to serve him.
Instead, North Korea’s priority was to discuss a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War, which is still only a truce. But Pompeo didn’t fly all the way to discuss about that. He was instructed to push Kim regime to deliver the prize so that Trump can brag about the trophy. Hence, the North charged that Pompeo’s delegation came up with “conditions and excuses” to delay ending the war.
But the biggest humiliation that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo brought back home wasn’t just the insult that the U.S. practises gangster-like diplomacy. As it turned out, when Kim Jong-un was scheduled to meet one-on-one with Trump’s top gun in Pyongyang, the North Korean leader never showed up. In fact, Mr Kim. has not been seen in public for seven days.
Finally, news agency KCNA (Korean Central News Agency) has revealed what Kim had been busy during Pompeo’s three-day visit to Pyongyang – visiting Junghung potato farm. Yes, turns out, potatoes were more important than Pompeo. The trip to Samjiyon county on the Chinese border saw him giving “field guidance” to potato farmers to plant high-yield varieties.
The North Korean leader also instructed the farmers to “introduce various species good to taste and ensure the quality of processed potato foods in production and thus raise the quality of potato production”. And he was seen inspecting potato powder at a factory, as well as inspecting construction sites in the remote county, which is home to the sacred Mount Paektu.
So, how could the American top diplomat described the talks as “productive” but did not meet with Kim Jong-un? Of course, Mr. Pompeo can’t lose face. To tell all and sundry that a pariah had refused to meet an envoy from a superpower nation was definitely humiliating. Clearly, the U.S. Secretary of State didn’t expect his spin to backfire as soon as he left the hermit kingdom.
The notorious Kim Jong-un sent his right-hand man, Kim Yong Chol, to meet Mike Pompeo instead. Yong Chol is the vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea. Still, despite being insulted, Donald Trump tweeted on Monday that he has “confidence” that Mr. Kim would honour the denuclearisation “contract” they signed at the Singapore summit.
Instead, President Trump accused China, North Korea’s powerful ally, of seeking to undermine the deal. He said – “I have confidence that Kim Jong Un will honor the contract we signed &, even more importantly, our handshake. We agreed to the denuclearization of North Korea. China, on the other hand, may be exerting negative pressure on a deal because of our posture on Chinese Trade-Hope Not!”
It appears that after the Trump-Kim Summit in Singapore, the North Korea is dragging its feet about the so-called “denuclearization”. After his huge propaganda victory, Kim Jong-Un does not see any incentive to dismantle his nuclear weapon program. Besides, China President Xi Jinping has become friendlier than usual towards Kim regime.
