Trump was right about United Nations when he criticised the world body for bloated bureaucracy and mismanagement during his first visit to its New York headquarters recently. And it didn’t take long for the U.S. president to prove how his allegations. It seems the U.N. is not only incompetent, but is fabulously corrupt too.
Otherwise, how do you explain the appointment of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe as WHO Goodwill Ambassador? When the World Health Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations that is concerned with international public health, announced last week that Dictator Mugabe will be the goodwill envoy, people were simply outraged and flabbergasted.
If an evil Robert Mugabe could become the WHO Goodwill Ambassador, then North Korean Kim Jong-un can certainly become U.N. Secretary General. Following outrage among Western donors and human rights groups at his appointment, the organization, with tail between legs, made a U-turn on Sunday and has since revoked the dictator as a goodwill ambassador.
However, the damage is already done. Had WHO proceeds with the appointment anyway, perhaps the United States should quit its membership and save American taxpayers a yearly funding of US$110 million. After all, the U.S. has just pulled out of UNESCO days before Mugabe’s appointment, and in the process saves Americans tons of money – a cool US$600 million.
It was a huge embarrassment to the WHO and its director after the world agency made the screw-up. The U.S. State Department said “this appointment clearly contradicts the United Nations ideals of respect for human rights and human dignity.” Many found it odd that a man accused of destroying Zimbabwe’s health-care system is now speaking out on global health issues.
Apparently, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus named Mugabe to the largely ceremonial post at a meeting on Wednesday in Uruguay. It was an insult to the peoples’ intelligence when Tedros praised Zimbabwe as “a country that places universal health coverage and health promotion at the centre of its policies to provide healthcare to all.” So what does Mr. Tedros has to say now?
Mr. Tedros said – “Over the last few days, I have reflected on my appointment of President Robert Mugabe as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for NCDs (non-communicable diseases) in Africa. As a result I have decided to rescind the appointment.” But not everyone is impressed at the “poor judgement” and “miscalculation” by Tedros, elected the first African head of WHO in May.
Clearly, there were irregularities, even corruptions, at United Nations. Mugabe was head of the African Union when the bloc endorsed Tedros – a former health and foreign minister of Ethiopia – over other African candidates for the top post, without any real regional contest. Does it need a rocket scientist to see how Tedros returns the favour by appointing Mugabe?
Mugabe’s track record of human-rights abuses, including violent crackdowns on political dissent, which had earned Zimbabwe international sanctions, is a public record. Mugabe regime also destroyed the country’s healthcare system and pursued policies that ruined what had been a vibrant agriculture, depriving all but a tiny elite of proper nutrition, water, and a sustainable livelihood.
The hospitals in Zimbabwe have gotten so bad that Mugabe flies to other countries for medical treatment. He celebrated his 90th birthday in a Singaporean health clinic. WikiLeaks exposed that Mugabe was battling prostate cancer as far back as 2008. His doctors urged him to step down but the power-crazy dictator refuses and chooses to cling to power instead. He had his prostate operation in Malaysia in 2011.
During his 37 years (since 1980) leading Zimbabwe as either president or prime minister, Mugabe was also the most corrupt leader the African Continent has ever witnessed. From a booming agricultural sector and a wealth of human capital, almost a quarter of Zimbabweans are currently in need of food assistance and 72% live in poverty today.
A former Marxist guerrilla, Mugabe regime rule the country based on autocratic, undemocratic and oppressive. In order to reward his cronies and family members, the dictator even violently took over white Zimbabweans’ farms and lands. But the inexperienced cronies hadn’t a clue about agriculture, and soon the country’s farming failed miserably.
His central bank began printing money faster than lightning to pay off debts. But Zimbabwe isn’t America, so the money printing stunt didn’t work. Instead, it triggered hyperinflation so horrible that at one point in 2008 the inflation hit the rate of 231,000,000%. Yes, Mugabe’s proudest moment was when 1 US dollar worth $100-trillion Zimbabwe dollar.
Mugabe is so obsessed with power it makes Rocket Man Kim Jong-un like a child’s play. When he hosted a lavish 93rd birthday party for himself early this year, his wish was for another 5-year term as president in 2018. Who says brutal people will not live long as karma will deal with them? Heck, he has even outlived the average life expectancy in his country by 3 decades.
His controversial and spendthrift 51-year-old wife, Grace, being groomed as his successor, was detained briefly by Singapore police this year when the Zimbabwe First Lady assaulted reporters and threw their mobile phones into a pond at the Gleneagles hospital. When Grace Mugabe was in Malaysia in 2009, she too assaulted some airport security personnel, telling them she could do whatever the hell she wanted to.
Even Non-communicable Diseases (NCD) Alliance members, whom would be represented by Robert Mugabe as their Goodwill Ambassador before the appointment was revoked, were “shocked and deeply concerned to hear of this appointment”. The decision to honour Mr. Mugabe is indeed an astonishing disaster that should not have had happened in the first place.
But why blame WHO’s Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus when the U.N. agency was on cloud nine after being praised for its decision to give its top job to an African for the first time, despite criticism that the former Ethiopian health minister was a senior member of Ethiopia’s authoritarian regime, which has brutally suppressed dissent for many years.
