Don’t panic when you see stock ticker symbol “GOOG” has a new owner, Alphabet Inc. instead of the usual Google Inc. The name change is part of a plan announced months ago to restructure the company to give more room to its forever-growing businesses. Google, or rather Alphabet has been explaining to all and sundry the reason behind the reorganization.
Alphabet Inc. Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat explained Google’s reorganization into a holding company isn’t about cutting costs. It is about growing the revenue in a very detailed and disciplined manner. Alphabet would allocate capital similarly as Google did – invest 70%in the core search business, 20% into ancillary businesses (such as cloud service), and 10% into crazy projects (like drone deliveries and self-driving cars).
Now that Google is officially a subsidiary of Alphabet, what happens to its “Don’t be Evil” infamous motto? The parent company has dropped the mantra from its code of conduct. In replacement, Alphabet employees are told to do the right thing – follow the law, act honorably, and treat each other with respect.
Although Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin will run the new holding company Alphabet – Page as CEO and Brin as president – clearly there’s an issue with branding. There’re still tons of people who don’t know what or who is Alphabet, as compared to Google. In fact, Alphabet does not even own www.alphabet.com because it belongs to BMW.
Alphabet also couldn’t buy ABC.com. It could only settle for ABC.xyz as its parking domain. However, there’re still many missing characters and Alphabet wasn’t happy until today. Seems Alphabet has acquired the whole strings of alphabet:
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.com (no kidding, the full alphabet)
Based on “whois records” Google is now the new owner of the full alphabet domain. Interestingly, the domain name was privately owned and appears to have been parked since Aug 2, 1999 prior to the acquistion. The record was last updated yesterday. As of time of publication, this domain hasn’t been able to resolve but probably Alphabet is working on it.
And since the latest domain acquisition was a private transaction, we may not know how much the lucky owner was paid, unless he or she publicly boasts about it. We won’t be surprise if it was in the region of millions, not that Google or rather Alphabet couldn’t afford to pay. There goes one happy millionaire.
